Error message when I try to re-install NIS 2012

I purchased NIS 2012 from a local retailer to replace my just-expired NIS 2011.  It worked fine until this morning when it quit altogether and the icon disappeared from the tray.  After trying a reboot and a Norton update with no success, I tried the online Norton uninstall/reinstall tool which did nothing.  Finally, I uninstalled NIS and tried to re-install from the CD.  After the initialization screen, it asks for my product key, then goes to an error screen captioned  "Norton Internet Security has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."  and asking whether I want to report the error to Microsoft.  What happened to my product and what should I do?
