Explorer.exe application error

We received this e-mail "Your Intuit Quickbooks Order Confirmation", a couple of days ago.  I went to the Intuit/Quickbooks site and read that this was a fake e-mail that was being sent out.  When I booted up my computer this morning, it didn't load anything on my desktop but the background; not the task bar at the bottom, no desktop icons.  Per a sugggestion from another forum, I pressed CTRL-ALT-DEL and clicked on task manager, clicked on file and then new task where I typed in explorer.exe and clicked OK.  Everything on my desktop showed up after that but I also got an error message "Explorer.exe - application error".  Can someone please tell me, is my computer infected with a virus or some sort of malware from that e-mail?
