Hello, folks.
I'm having a serious problem when shutting down or restarting my system since I installed NIS2009. Here's exactly what happens: When I click START>TURN OFF COMPUTER, I have to wait several minutes before the window comes up giving me the choice of standby, shut down, or restart. When that window finally comes up, it's usually preceded by a very brief window saying that ccSvcHst won't shut down. After I click on "shut down" or "restart", it says "saving settings" as usual, then says the computer is shutting down (as usual) but it doesn't shut down for several minutes.
Immediately after restarting the computer, if I try to restart again, everything is normal. I have to do a certain amount of work before the slowdown happens. I don't know if there's a certain "thing" that I have to do to cause the problem; I will do things like open and close files, copy files, play solitaire, get online, just mess around, and check the shutdown process after each "thing" I do. And finally, I'll find that the shutdown is hanging.
Here's the most interesting thing: My mother-in-law has the exact same problem. In fact, she's the one who noticed that the slowdown doesn't happen right after a reboot, that you have to do a little work before it happens. Her computer is nothing like mine: different brand, different OS.
I've been working with Norton tech support for days. Following their advice, I removed my old version of Systemworks and installed Systemworks 2009 because the older Systemworks was incompatible with NIS2009. I've used Norton Removal Tool to clean out my machine and reinstalled both of those products. (I don't know how many times I've done that.) I cleaned out my temp files. I disabled all my startups because they thought some startup program was interfering with ccSvcHst. I ran Disk Clean up. I de-fragged. I ran Scan disk. I emptied my recycle bin (duh). In the process of doing all this, there were times when I had no Norton products running at all, and I was unable to cause the slowdown. And it never happened when I was using NIS2008. It also never happened to my mother-in-law until her son-in-law (That would be ME!) recommended she get NIS2009!
I'm about to recommend to her that she send her disk back to Norton for a refund and we'll find something else. The 60 days is about to run out, so if someone here doesn't have a solution, we're going to have to do that.
Speaking of ccSvcHst, I've seen lots of complaints posted on different forums about ccSvcHst hogging cpu time. I've noticed there are lots of times when my hard drive just starts clicking like crazy, and when I check the Windows Task Manager, it's ccSvcHst that's causing it. Maybe this is relevant; I don't know.
Thanks for any help.
