Completely agree with Floating_Red; as you just experienced, two realtime security programs will get into each other's way and interfere with threat detection, ultimately rendering your computer more vulnerable to threats.
It is therefore strongly recommended that you uninstall Avira and also run the Avira AntiVir RegistryCleaner (equivalent of Norton removal tool) to get the leftovers out of the registry - all security programs are very sticky, and booting them off the system via control panel is not enough. Avira AntiVir RegistryCleaner and the instructions (please read them carefully before downloading and running the tool) are available over here:

Note: Avira also offers an Avira AntiVir Removal Tool. This tool is supposed to remove malware - not Avira itself (in other words, the name of this tool is misleading).
