False Virus on Internet page with pop up and Phone number to ring

I logged into Google Chrome, trying to help a friend online delete and secure his Google accounts history. As you all may know, Google can track all of your activities, Travel, Internet history etc.
Next thing I know a new tab opens with the Norton 360 Premier app, looking much like the one that opens when I do actually open Norton, but mine does not open on a web page. If you use 360 you will know what I mean.

Then a pop-up appears saying my computer is infected and all my Data is at risk, my Credit card info, Bank account details etc. Very Scary, right? The pop up advised me to immediately call 1-800-016-371 to get help from Norton on how to remove this, so I called the number, as soon as I disconnected from the internet.

I was asked to reconnect to the net and follow 3 or 4 steps that would allow them access to my system. ***ALARM BELLS***

I asked them what Internet security program they worked for and they said "We are third party consultant" Hmmm!

I asked the person who I was talking to to hold on a minute, I felt uncomfortable having a stranger delve into my Computer and not because I have any thing to hide, it just didn't sit right with me. I was googling, looking for "False Warnings from Norton" and informed them I was doing so as I have heard of false alerts like this one. They ask your first name and phone number, then they ask to access your computer, "It is completely safe and you can disconnect any time you feel it necessary"

I was then directed to a site www.fastsupport.com and directed to enter the details they provided me with.

That was as far as I wanted to go, I was very suspicious.

If you are not receiving support from Norton, I would advise that you hang up and do not allow any third party to access your computer.

I might be wrong, but my gut feeling was bad about this.

Cheers from a very happy Norton Customer
