Hello everyone,
I hope that all is well. I have two related feature requests to make for Norton Security and Norton Security with Backup.
When routinely scanning my external hard drives for malware I have recently noticed that some of my files are being flagged as malware and removed. Some of the files are false positives (older versions of paid for applications that I bought back in 2013) and some could be considered malware/hacker tools e.g. the well-known rootkit detector IceSword and the debugger OllyDbg.
Since I would like to keep these files I would like to make 2 related feature requests:
- Allow a file to be restored from Quarantine and add that file as a scan exclusion (e.g. via a tick box selection). I recall previous versions of Internet Security having this option but while Norton Security also has it, using it only restores the file and does not add the exclusion. Adding the files manually as scan exclusions one by one is very tedious. Having this option work correctly would make this easier.
- The ability to exclude a file from being detected during a scan (and via the real-time protection) by adding the SHA-256 hash of that file (or other suitable hash of that file) to the scan exclusions. This way one hash added to the scan exclusions will not detect any duplicates files stored on my external hard drives or elsewhere on my computer.
I’m asking for these features since my list of scan exclusions is growing longer and more difficult to maintain. Since files such as IceSword and OllyDbg might be considered dubious/controversial, I don’t want to submit them as false positives.
In addition, I’m not the author of the purchased applications that are being detected and removed and thus submitting them as false positives may be a waste of Symantec’s time.
Each time I connect my external backup/archive hard drives they receive different drive letters rendering previous exclusions invalid (almost all the time). The use of file hashes would solve this.
If I can provide any further clarification or information on these feature requests, please let me know.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Have a great day.
