File Insight indicated .exe was "untrustworthy" -but I can still use it?

Hi All,

I'm using Norton Internet security 2011 with Windows XP.

I downloaded a game and checked it for viruses. There were none, so I loaded the program. It ran fine and didn't cause any problems on my computer.

Later I checked it with Norton's file insight which indicated the file was untrustworthy  "There are many indications that this file is untrustworthy".

However, Norton has made no attempt to block or limit the files use.

So I guess I don't understand the purpose of file insight. If the virus scan didn't dect any viruses, why is it "untrustworthy". And if it is untrustworthy, why hasn't Norton prevented or limited access to the file?

Thanks!

Hi beancounter,

Welcome to the Norton Community. Can you tell us your version of NIS 2011? You can find this from Support > About menu. Also do you have SP 3 on your Windows XP?

What exactly does File Insight say about the program? You can check this in a couple of ways. Click on Application Ratings from the main NIS interface and scroll down to the .exe in question and see what the rating is. You can also browse to the .exe from Windows Explorer and right click and select Norton Internet Security > Norton File Insight.

The latter will bring up a File Insight window showing more information about the program. It will show how many estimated users of the program, maturity level and the trust level. What do each of these categories say about the file? You can also post a screenshot of the File Insight window and attach to your post using the  symbol at the top of the reply editor.

Sometimes File Insight may show a program is untrustworthy solely because it is new (or a new version) which does not have very many people who have used the program, not because the file is actually malware of some sort. In this case it would not be appropriate for NIS to do anything with the file except to let you know the details of the File Insight.

If NIS had detected any suspicious behavior from this program it would have taken action appropriately.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
Allen

Hi Allen,

I'm using version 18.5.0.125 and SP3.

I've tried various methods but can't upload a screenshot.

Per file insight, the file was over 3 years old and had thousands of users.

"It performed no suspicious actions" and is labeled as "Bad".

I guess it's just some quirk

Thanks for your help!
