Hello,
To give the briefest possible version of events:
On the 13th I got an intrusion attempt blocked 'Angler Exploit Kit Website 8' whilst on a trusted website used by many people. I ran various Norton and Malwarebytes scans, all of which just found some tracking cookies.
On the 15th, Norton came up with Error 3048,3 whilst the PC was idle. I followed the instructions given, live update worked fine, quick scan found nothing, full system scan found nothing, Malwarebytes found nothing, Power Eraser found 3 files, 2 are the .exe files for X-wing Alliance and Rogue Squadron from GOG.com, listed as Unknown in NPE and I'm fairy certain they're nothing to worry about as I have had NPE flag up GOG .exe files as unknown before. The third was a file called mydotcomdetector.dll which it listed as Bad, a browser plugin. This is from the launcher for my.com Games which I had installed the previous week and is again a legitimate company/program, and has been installed on other computers for months to no ill effect.
Anyway, I told it to remove the mydotcomdetector.dll since I wasn't intending to use the related programs further anyway.
Now today, Norton suddenly spat out an alert/removal notice about binkw32.dll from Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition (from GOG but again I doubt that's anything to do with it), saying it detected Trojan.Gen.SMH.2 and removed the file. I installed that game on the pc well over a year ago, the file in question must have been scanned hundreds of times by now, including on the 15th and 13th by both Norton and Malwarebytes, yet suddenly today it is dangerous. I ran NPE again, and it only detected the 2 previous .exe files for X-wing and Rogue Squadron again, which again I seriously doubt are anything to worry about.
I'm seriously thinking of just formatting the PC and starting over just to get past the headache of 'is there or isn't there something wrong'. Ordinarily I'd just think it could be a false positive and move on after checking as before (with Norton, NPE and Malwarebytes) but this seems a bit much for 1 week.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
