I've used "inSSIDer" software for checking nearby " access points" ....and found the channel number info provided , very handy for enabling me to select an "uncluttered " channel , in order to enable me to maximize my own channel settings etc;.
I came across this other very handy software , which takes "optimizing " router positioning within your own home to the next level !
The software is from "Ekahau " ....a Finnish site which offers their "HeatMapper" application at no cost .
http://www.ekahau.com/products/heatmapper/overview.html
There are some other very good tools on the site...but the HeatMapper has helped me locate a better position for my Access Point via the survey mapping capability it offers....
After using the tool to "map" my property...I managed to locate a much better site for my modem/router .
As it turned out.....the "reinforcing mesh " embedded in the plaster walling near a door frame , was having a negative effect on my signal , and I was able to find a better location that improved matters by a very good margin !
Anyone interested in optimizing their signal...will find this a useful tool ...Well worth a visit to the site and check out the details...The Ekahau site has the "Green o/k " from Norton Safe Web b.t.w
