FIOS security vs NIS

I just ordered FIOS from Verizon. Part of the sales deal is their security package which does everything that NIS does as far as I can tell - except the sales person made a big deal about how their package could deal with the speed of FIOS much better than NIS.  This sounded bogus to me, but I'm not in a position to know.  From what I've read on the board (not a lot, admittedly), there are a number of you who are running FIOS and NIS and are not filled with viruses, trojans, etc etc.  Any comments?

The Verizon security package comes with the FIOS installation, but I can tell them to stop at any time.  It is $8.95/month which also includes a continual back-up of my local system.  If NIS is already running and doing its job, why bother?

Thanks for input to my dilemma!
