Oh, one other detail: we are running Firefox with only the standard extensions and no add-ons. If there’s some problem with the extensions, does anyone know which ones do and do not work.

Hi,

Please let me know if you have google toolbar or Pic lens (though you have told no add ons) installed in Firefox.

If so, disable the Google toolbar from Firefox and check for the issue.

Let me know your observations.

Your work around will be a good option for the time being if you are still facing the issue.

Cheers !!!

Hi:

Nope, no Google Toolbar (we do have that little search toolbar that defaults to Google, but I am pretty sure that is not what you mean by Google toolbar). We do not have PicLens either.

Currently have no Addons or extensions installed, no themes beyond Default, and only the standard installation plugins, those being: Adobe Acrobat, Java, Metastream 3, Microsoft DRM (two of these), Mozilla Default, Quicktime 6.5, Shockwavw Flash, Windows Media Player Dynamic Link Library.

BTW, when we shutdown last night I noticed we also have the problem where you have to use "End Task' to kill ccSvcHst on shutdown. I plan to ignore this for now.

So far so good: restarted today with no problems. Will post an update if problem recurrs.

Thanks,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

We greatly appreciate your feedback.

We have been trying to reproduce the problem in-house plus we have been working with the Mozilla organization in order to resolve the problem that you brought up. However at this time we have not been able to reproduce the problem.

The problem that you encounter seems to occur when two or more firefox.exe processes are running on the same system. If you encounter this problem in the future then please make sure that no other “firefox.exe” processes are running on the system prior to launching firefox. If you do see another instance of firefox in the task-manager then please kill the process before launching firefox. Doing so should resolve the problem.

I would be more than happy to perform some debugging on your machine if possible. Let me know if you would be open to this option.

Thanks

I have the exact same problem.

The question is what causes firefox not to shut down in the first place.

Maybe it's the Norton phishing or Identity safe?

I was wondering if it is a "limited account" vs "admin account" problem again.

If you look at my thread http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=496

the "Intrusion Protection OFF" problem only happens for "limited account" but not for "admin account".  Which may explain  why symantec's  "However at this time we have not been able to reproduce the problem"  response.

Like the Symantec's Symantec Employee Jens_Sorensen  said it's an extension problem............and Norton 360 has to be that extension.

Maybe like "the intrusion protection problem", if you run firefox under "limited account", 360 has problems quiting its processes.

Hi gps,

I would like to know if your Limited User account have any login password. If the answer is negative, try assisgning a password to the limited user account and then restart the computer and check if still Intrusion Prevention is turned off in those accounts.

Let me know the result of this test.

Hi Jens:

Thanks for the tip about killing all the firefox.exe processes and restarting -- this information has turned what was quite a frequent problem into an occasional annoyance.

I'm afraid it is not going to be very convenient to do debugging on my machine. It is my mother-in-law's computer, and I am oly on it occasionally, and am leaving town soon.

Thanks for your help,

Gordon

Hi,

I am having the same problem. The only fix that works is deleting the coFFPlgn.dll in Mozilla Firefox's components folder.

If I delete the coFFPlgn.dll, and have phishing protection enabled in 360 v2, Norton makes another coFFPlgn.dll and I have the same problem all over again. If I delete coFFPlgn.dll, and have phishing protection disabled, then Firefox works fine - but the problem is that there's that annoying red x in the norton toolbar and I am reminded to turn phishing protection on everytime I open Norton.

I can't seem to disable Norton as an add-on in Firefox (it doesn't show up as a selection).

Also, the disappearing history/bookmarks/back button occurs after closing firefox, firefox works fine the first time, but after restarting a new browser window everything is gone.

Its frustrating, and I don't see a point in renewing. I would be happy to be a part of any debugging, if possible.

Are you still seeing this problem with the latest update to Norton 360 version 2.4.0.4? Please be sure you are running this versin and if not, please run LiveUpdate to get the latest update. Thanks!

Since I'm encountering the same problem I can assure you it still exists with version 2.4.0.4.

Now there has been an update for firefox to version 3.0.2, and still the problem persists.

Hi,

I've managed to sort it I think.  Open CoFFPlgn.dll with notepad, select all the jumbled text and delete. Type some random letters and then save (to replace the Norton version). Then, right click, select properties and make the file read only. That way Norton can't update it when you reboot. Thus, no red X from norton and no Norton presence in Firefox :)

Mike

new firefox version 3.0.3 installed, and completely updated N360 V2 still has the problem of zombie processes.

Hi vector771,

While that might fix the problem for you,  this may cause more problems than it resolves. I would NOT recommend performing this action, as editing DLLs from Symantec products could affect the security of your system.

Unfortunately, we do not have a workaround at this time. One suggestion from our team is to disable 3rd party add-ons. I apologize for this inconvenience; we are researching the issue and working to resolve it quickly. Thank you for taking the time to find a workaround for the problem, and please continue to try different things and post your results. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I am having same problem. FF3, XP Media Center 2005 SP3, current version of N360, firefox sometimes hangs on close.

The answer, close firefox in process manager, is already the fix I'm using; it is not acceptable.

This is a fresh install of Windows as of last night. Previous install had same problems.

I hope you fix this soon! :)

This is a prevanent problem with Firefox 3.0. Disabling Add-ons will not help. The only way is to open Task Manager, then End Firefox.

Jens_Sorensen: The reason that you have not been able to reproduce it in-house is because you are on Vista, right? This issue only happens on XP machines with Firefox 3.0.

As for me, I lose all my bookmarks and menus and Back/Forward button when Firefox hangs, but I don't seem to lose my Norton Toolbar, no matter what.

This issue has been resolved: http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Norton_360&thread.id=4764

The issue you are seeing is a known issue with Firefox and Norton 360 which causes the Firefox process to hang.   Symantec is working with Mozilla to resolve this issue and will issue a patch when it becomes available.   We will update this forum thread once we have the dates for the patch locked down.

There is workaround previously mentioned in this thread.  Another temporary solution is to close all Firefox windows, bring up the Windows Task Manager, and then perform an End Task on any Firefox processes still running.  When you re-launch Firefox, it will work properly.

Its not a workaround. Its a complete solution. Why?

FirefoxPortable with Norton Toolbar

  1. Fully competible with the Norton toolbar
  2. Faster; designed for use on flash drives....which are very slow. Also does not use the registary. Every couple days I have to defrag the registary to mantain max performance with Firefox. With FirefoxPortable, you just have to perform a routine disk defrag once a month.
  3. All files are contained within one folder, no registary entries, no temp files, no mess. To uninstall, delete the directory.
  4. Does not hang in memory.
