FireFox and FlashPlayer

Hi Guys
Just a question about FireFox and flash player! I haven’t been using FireFox for that long so I’m just unsure of this. Basically I’m wondering does FireFox automatically update FlashPlayer? Because I know web browsers like Chrome update it using PepperFlash so is it the same with FireFox?

And are you at more risk if you don’t update FlashPlayer?

And finally if FlashPlayer doesn’t update automatically does it get pushed to you when a update is due?

Thanks a lot guys!

Hello Krusty13
Thanks for the information I’ll make sure to update it whenever I can I will also post back tomorrow at around (6:00 UK British time) sorry for a long wait but I just have one more question to ask regarding the flash player and I will now most likely be on my computer at that time and I need to be on my computer to get the information!

Thanks a lot for your help

Hi, AudiA1.

Here is another way to find out if all of your Firefox add-ons/plugins (including Flash Player) are up-to-date.  Click the link below.  On that page, your Firefox add-ons/plugins that are up-to-date will display a green button next to them and those that are not up-to-date will display a reddish orange button next to them.  If you see the reddish orange kind, click it and you will be redirected to the appropriate website to download an update for that particular add-on/plugin.  I visit this site once every day.

Hi Inqurier

Thanks for the infomation here. I've just visted this site and my Shockwave Flash is up to date but there's a plugin at the top which is another Shockwave plugin called Shockwave for Director

(Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.6.6.63)

And the status of it is vulnerable. When I click update it brings me to the website to update it and then when I click download it comes up with a message saying

'This page contains a new Shockwave format movie that the current Shockwave plug-in cannot handle. Would you like to download the newer version now?' And when I click yes it just takes me back to the page where you download it from which is the getadobe one.

It says in the description of this that this player is used to play 3D games and online learning things but I don't think I need it. I only really use my computer for college work and to watch some YouTube videos. Will not having this update make me more vulnerable? Because if so I'm not sure how to get this.

Thanks a lot! :smileyhappy:

Hi AudiA1,

You can access the Flash Player Settings Manager in Windows Control Panel.  There you will find a set of options for updating Flash Player, including automatic updates.  These options are also provided during the installation process whenever you install or update Flash Player.

Hi SendOfJive
I’m using Windows 8 how do I get to these options? I tried typing in flash player and couldn’t find it

Thanks a lot

Hello SendOfJive
Not to worry I found the process sorry!
And does this mean I don’t need to update the other flash in my previous post?

Thanks a bunch

Shockwave and Flash Player are two different things (even though Firefox may sometimes refer to Flash, as "Shockwave Flash").  If you have Shockwave installed, it should be updated to the latest version for security reasons.  However, Shockwave is not widely used and you could probably uninstall it and never miss it.  That's what I did years ago, and I have yet to come across anything that required me to reinstall it.

Me too!

One system of mine came with Shockwave Player and another with AIR.  I've uninstalled them from my systems and haven't missed them.

I think you need Shockwave Player and AIR for some certain certain games.

Hi SendOfJive and Krusty13
How do I go about uninstalling this shock wave add on if I don’t really need it?

Thanks a lot

Windows Control Panel > Uninstall a program (Windows 7).  It should be similar in Windows 8.

Hi Krusty13
Thanks a lot I will try this when I’m next on my computer! Will it be listed as Shockwave Director or listed as something else?

Thanks a lot!

Yep, something like that.  Maybe Adobe Shockwave.

You will want to keep Adobe Flash Player.

Hi, AudiA1.

Yes, the others are right.  You don't need Shockwave Director if you don't play video games online.  Just follow Krusty13's instructions on how to delete it.

Hey Guys!
Thanks a lot for all the info I’ll be going on my computer soon so I’ll uninstall the program then! I’ll let you know how I get on!

Thanks a bunch

Hi Guys
I just uninstalled Shockwave and it now no longer comes up as needing to be updated thanks a lot!
And I just have one last question which is that I have three plugins that are read as unknown by FireFox
They are
Photo Gallery
It also says NPWLPG underneath it not sure what it means.
Intel R identity Protection Technology
Intel web components updates installs and updates the intel web components.
Microsoft Office 2013
The plugin allows you to have a better experience with Microsoft SharePoint

Just to add I got the intel one because my computer is HP with intel inside, and I got Microsoft Office 2013 because I bought Microsoft Student 2013 so I’m guessing it gave me the plugin but as for the PhotoGallery I think it might be something bundled with the computer so I don’t really mind about that.

Any ideas why they’re coming up as unknown? I’m sure they’re doing no harm!

Thanks a lot for you help

I wouldn't worry about those 'Unknown' plugins.

I have four on my machine that show as Unknown as well, one of them is the Intel Identity Protection plugin.  This laptop is an HP as well.

Can I suggest a better tool for making sure you're programs are patched is Secunia PSI.  I use it and it is great at checking your system for any programs with known vulnerabilities.  I use v2 which you can download from the system requirements page.  If you want v2 DON'T click the green Download button.  On the system requirements page under the green button is a link to the v2 .exe

Hi Krusty13
Thanks for the heads up on this and the reasurrence and hurray for HP Laptops!
Thanks for the information on this program although I don’t have a lot of add ons or downloaded programs I will check out this program none the less!

Thanks for the information!

Take care

There must be a reason to take V2 rather than V3 of Secunia PSI but if you stated it I missed it ..... could you enlighten? Is it the lst free version for example?
