Hi. I have been having trouble with Firefox v3.6.13 hanging when exiting. I'm not even able to bring out windows task manager after this happens. I have to log off system and back in. When I start Firefox in safe mode, having all extensions and plug-ins disabled, I can safely exit Firefox with no probs of it hanging.
I then started enabling the add-ons in small bunches, sometimes only 1 at a time. Finally after a long time trying to narrow it all down, I realized it was only the 1 extension [Norton IPS 2.0] that is causing all the fuss with exiting the browser. Is there any other trouble reports on this? I'm definitely sure about this plugin causing the delimna and nothing else for extension or plug-in. Double checked several times. I'm at a lost on this, as this just started very recently. Any ideas on this? Thank you for any reply that might offer insight on whats happening and if there's a fix somehow.
I'm having a very similar problem. Firefox 3.6.13 with Norton Internet Security 2011 (IPS v. 2.0). When I close Firefox, the window disappears, but it continues to run in the background. When you try to open Firefox again, you get an error that it is already running and you have to go into Task Manager to kill the process before relaunching Firefox.
Since this problem started very soon after installing NIS 2011, I began disabling add-ons in Firefox and found that if I just disable Norton IPS 2.0, the problem went away. In an extended troubleshooting session with Norton support, we uninstalled/re-installed Firefox and that did not correct the issue. We then uninstalled/re-installed NIS 2011 and this did correct the issue...but only temporarily. After about a week, it started doing the same thing again.
Although I have no evidence to back this up, it seems to start after I view live streaming Flash content. The work-around, of course, is to disable the IPS 2.0 add-on, but that is not a permanent solution.
I'm not certain that the following procedure will solve the issue, but it is worth a try, and will not cause any harm or loss of any of your add-ons. Firefox's extension configuration files can become corrupted - sometimes deleting them and allowing Firefox to recreate them will resolve issues like this.
Hi. No I don't run any other security program or anti-virus. Also my computer does what the other person mentioned as well. Sometimes, if there's not a hang with Firefox on exit, it will then be running in the background with no window showing. I have done all thats been mentioned to no avail. I'm at a loss on this. My first impression is that its a very minor conflict and possibly from IPS 2.0 getting updated very recently that is causing this. Never had trouble before and have been using firefox all along and been using NIS all along for years, with all the updates of both, but this is new for occurences. Thanks to whoever might have a workable solution . Nothing is working as yet, other than disabling IPS 2.0 which defeats alot of what I bought NIS 2011 for. I do use the Norton Toolbar tho, with no comprimises.
Thank you for all your help, I had missed 1 file when deleting those extension related files before. It is working A-OK now. Thank you so much SendOfJive, much appreciated!
I am having the same problem with firefox, deleting the extension files didn't fix it. The IPS plugin not only didn't work with firefox, its also cause my IE8 not able to start up. If I disable the plugin in both programs, then they start working again.
