Firefox keeps opening new tabs on its own

Firefox keeps opening new tabs on its own, I’ve updated and ran virus scans, used Firefox refresh function and searched the web. To date nothing has worked, are there any suggestion about how to stop Firefox from opening new tabs on its own?? There are days went I have 10 tabs opening on their own.

Hints for installing Malwarebytes Free v3.x and running an initial Threat Scan are posted in BevStra's thread MyWay Search.

Yup.  MyWay was a nightmare...

The fourth and final troubleshooting step in the Mozilla support article Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link :

Check for Malware

If the problem is still not solved, or if Firefox is opening multiple tabs or windows with unwanted content, consider that your system may be infected by malware.  For more information, see Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

That Mozilla support article Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware has a list of suggested malware scanners and includes a download link for the same Malwarebytes Free scanner recommended <here> by SoulAsylum.  Hints for installing Malwarebytes Free v3.x and running an initial Threat Scan are posted in BevStra's thread MyWay Search.

That's not good.  I'm with Soul on this one, run MBAM as soon as possible, and, if this is really bad, perhaps you might consider ComboFix?

Hi Gauis:

If SoulAsylum's suggestion to run a Malwarebytes Free scan doesn't help, there are some additional suggestions in the Mozilla support article Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link.  These empty tabs sometimes start appearing when the Action for one of the content types listed at Tools | Options | Applications has been changed from its default.

The initial suggestion to perform a browser refresh (Help | Troubleshooting Information | Refresh Firefox...) is often a good place to start any troubleshooting, but please read the support article Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings and make a list of all the browser extensions currently installed at Tools | Add-ons | Extensions before starting if you decide to proceed.  A browser refresh will not remove your bookmarks, cookies or download/browsing history but you will likely have to re-install your browser extensions after the refresh.  Media plugins at Tools | Add-ons | Plugins like Adobe Flash will not be removed but customized plugin settings will be reset to their defaults.

Hello Galus. Clear your FF cookies and cache. Then download the FREE version of Malwarebytes and run. What you are describing suggests a PUP or other malware which Norton isn't focusing on.
