Firewall: Connection Blocking - now I'm being asked for my password when I want to BLOCK access

Hi, I am used to getting the odd message in the past saying 'The computer ",,,,,,,,," is attempting to access Microsoft Word (or Spotify, or Skype, Or Excel, etc) on your computer.  Do you want to allow this connection?"

And then the two options - Block or Allow.

I always click Block - but just recently (since I purchased my most recent version for Mac), it now asks me to type in my password to allow SymUIAgent to make the changes - I am worried that this is a false message and that by typing in my password I am going to allow the access as surely I don't need my password to block someone?

Please could you advise?

Many thanks

Hello,

NIS 5.x behavior has be changed from NAV 4.x. In these instances no logged in "Admin" user should be asked to authenticate  when selecting either Block or Allow options at these alerts. Only "Standard" users should be asked for their password. Here are a couple of questions.

Are you using NIS 5.0?

Are you logged in as an "Admin" user, or using an "Admin" account?

Also, in the event that it may matter in the as we work on this issue,.....

What version of OSX are you using?

Thank you, and sorry for any inconvenience.

David

Hi David, thanks for getting back to me.

I am using NAV 11.1 (which I believe is the only option available for my MAC operating system).

I am logged in as an "Admin" user.

I am using OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

Please let me know if you need any other information.

Many thanks

Adriana

Adriana,

sorry, I'm afraid I made a couple of errors in my response to you.

Am I correct in understanding that you have NAV 11.1 only? That is to say, there is no NPF (Norton Personal Firewall) product on your system. Correct?

There are have been some changes to 10.6.x (Snow Leopard). Because of changes to Snow Leopard users must authenticate before making changes in the firewall. The application is "UIAgent" because that's the process that hosts these alerts. We tried to instruct the operating system to hide the alerts if the user is an administrator but Snow Leopard broke this.
The only remedy is to re-install which will hide the alerts once. However, you'll lose their settings so it's up to you if you want to reinstall or not. The alerts are normal.

Thanks

David
