Firewall off/360 won't open

I know this has probably been posted/asked a million times and I am sorry for wasting your time but..

I'm 99.9% sure my computer has a virus but it works half decently and Norton never detects is so whatever. about 30 mins ago I was on the internet and my computer said my virtual memory was too low, and then I noticed that Norton 360 wasn't even open. So I opened it, and it said that my backup wasn't completed, my firewall wasn't on, my fishing protection wasn't on (although according to my Norton toolbar in Internet explorer, it is), and something else wasn't working either..(I cant remember what). I have always made sure to have my firewall on, I wouldn't be stupid enough to turn it off so I don't get why it was off to begin with. Anywho, I clicked fix, and it claimed to have fixed everything, but when I re-opened Norton the same problems were still there. So I clicked fix again, and halfway through 'fixing' it, Norton randomly shut down and now it won't open. When I click on Norton the little timer icon shows up beside my pointer but it fails to actually open. I tried the steps on this link : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton360.nsf/0/beb3568f95d7f6fe65257247006482eb?OpenDocument&seg=hm&lg=en&ct=us

but on step number 4, I can only get as far as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup and I can't get /state to open because the folder doesn't appear to exist.

Anyway I fear for my computer at the moment as aparently the firewall is not on and there is most likely a virus so if anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated. I have windows xp if that helps anyone but I'm not sure what version of 360 seeing as I can't open it.

- Was this N360 -installation on your pc when you got it ?

- For how long have you used this N360 ?

- Do you have any installation file for N360 i.e. DVD or downloaded file ?

My suggestion is to uninstall and reinstall N360. Do you see this as on option ?

I´m sorry, I forgot one important option !

You most likely need Norton removal tool.

Use the following link to get the latest version

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

I think the uninstall / reinstall would be great but let's get the virus (if there is one) OFF the computer first.

If you have a boxed CD of N360, then boot from the CD and run the Norton Recovery Tool from the CD (this the Norton Emergency scanner to help clean an infected system).

If you don't have a boxed CD, then you can download the file from this page.  Directions are on the page also.

Keep us posted on the progress.  Thanks.
