Firewall problem

Evidently a recent update messed up the firewall. I cannot log on to any site with different browsers and disk activity with firewall enabled is at 100%. I managed to get here by disabling the firewall. Has anyone else had this issue in the last month or so and is there a fix? I updated today and it's still a problem!

Hi RonR,

Can you disable the Firewall from NIS 2008 and try to connect to the Peer-to-Peer network?

I installed NIS but have not yet paid for the subscription for the anti virus definitions. Would this have any bearing on the problem?

After the 15 day trial it will stop getting updates, and Auto-Protect plus some other parts of it...

After the 15 day you should try the 2009 version, that is much better than 2008.

Or if you like testing you can participate in the 360 3.0 beta program. Until the final is finished you can use it.

Yes, when I disable the NIS firewall, the peer to peer networked computers are visible again. I am using the Windows firewall untill I can get this problem resolved.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for checking the firewall. Try to create a firewall rule for the computers in your Peer-To-peer network.

1. Start Norton Internet Security.
2. Click the Norton Internet Security tab.

3. Click Settings.

4. Under Web Browsing, click Personal Firewall > Configure.

5. Under Personal Firewall in left pane, click Advanced Settings.

6. In right pane, click Configure

7. In the General Rules window, click Add.
8. In the Add Rule wizard, select Allow, and then click Next.
9. Select Connections to and from other computers, and then click Next.
10. Select Only the computers and sites listed below, and then click Add.

11. Select Individually, enter the IP addresses of the computers in the Peer-to-Peer network separated by comas","  and then click OK.
12. Click Next.

13. Click All Types of communication(all ports, local and remote) and then click Next.

14. Click Next.
15. If you want the logs for this rule to be saved, check Create an event log entry, and then click Next.
16. In the "What do you want to call this rule?" box, type a name for the rule, and then click Next.
17. Click Finish
18. Click Move Up to move the rule to top, and make it a higher priority.

19. Click OK, and again click OK.

20. Click OK.

Let us know the results.

First of all are you behind a router? Thats what matters. I use uTorrent all the time and I had to port forward my hardware firewall then make uTorrent “allowed”. Most people forget this.

Yogesh,

Thanks for your help on this. I cannot try your suggestion just yet because the Settings button is grayed out because I have not renewed my NIS subscription yet. Once I renew I will try this and post back.

Malwareman,

Not behind a router, just a hub at present time. Thanks for your reply.

Hello -- I have Windows 7/64  bit and Norton Internet Security 2012.  I am being told by a download program that a port is not open.  What can I do with Norton's Smart Firewall to open this port?  I am a novice when it comes to this sort of thing, so I *really* need help.  Can anyone here help me??

Hi

Welcome to Norton forum,

I would like to know more about the version of norton and the product which you are using and the product for which the port to be opened.

You can follow the following website to how to create a rule to open the port. But before that it is my personal advise that be careful in doing so and do not unnecessarily open the ports which might lead to a loophole for the hackers to enter into the computer.

Hi scotjudy333,

What program are you referencing?  The Norton Smart Firewall should make the proper port configurations and network access permissions for legitimate programs automatically.  It is therefore rare to get a notice like the one you describe.  Some more details would be useful.

Hello

You could run a full scan with your N360 and see if there is any malware or pup's. N360 is an older product now. The current products would be the Norton Security products. I wouldn't have tried resetting the firewall in case there is some malware which is trying to call home. That might be why Norton might have blocked the connection. You probably didn't check the History Logs. They are gone now, but a scan might show something.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Now that you have uninstalled Norton, restart the computer again and try reinstalling it. There may have been some issue with his Norton installation, or some updates.
