NIS 2011 (last vrsion, cant recall the version number)
IE8
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Vista SP2
OK have NIS2011 installed about a week now. Thought I’d check logs to make sure all is well.
Noticed these 2 entries in recent Activity from last night:
1)
Firewall Rules Created for Internet Explorer
MYPC (my ISP assigned address)
49802
Outboound TCP port5050
2)
MYPC (my ISP assigned address)
49800
Outbound TCP port843
a few questions about this. I installed NIS2011 over a week ago and have launched IE at least 50 times since initial NIS installation
1. Should IE be using like port 80 to connect to internet?
2. Should the firewall rules have been set the first time IE was launched after NIS2011 installation? I’m sure it was. Kinda remember seeing that. So why new firewall rules now?
It uses different ports for different protocols. Port 843 is used when Flash connects outwards, for example. If it hadn't before, a new rule would have been made, even if IE had been started before. I think Yahoo uses port 5050. In either case, it's normal for an application to use different ports at different times, and a new rule will be made at that point.
ok and my home page is yahoo (has been for years), but then again why the new rule a week later?
Hello Calls
Perhaps Yahoo updated it's site. If there was a problem with anything, NIS 2011 would have told you. As my son has told me, only look at logs if you are having a problem. Thanks.
Other applications use IE for their own uses. They might check for something weekly or with some other frequency, and then the necessary rule is created. It is nothing strange about new port rules being created.
thanks Everyone
I think what happened is my wife logged in under her yahoo account and that "opened" that yahoo IM type thing they have in their email services.
That would have produced a new outbound connection on another port, yes. :)
Whenever you see a normal program create new rules, don't worry. It's perfectly normal. It is definitely not all the time a program initiates all the outbound connections it is capable of under different conditions the first time it is launched.
