Firewall Settings

I was reviewing the firewall settings today and browsed through the Program Rules.  I saw that some programs are set to ALLOW and others are set to AUTO.  Could be I'm having a ditzy day but I couldn't find where they tell a person what the difference is between the two settings.  Why are some allowed and some auto?  I noticed that the Microsoft game apps were all set to AUTO.  Since I'm still having problems with the scanning and stalling when it starts to scan an Xbox game app, I'm wondering if the Auto setting has anything to do with it.  I don't think it would but I'm hoping someone who has more knowledge about the Program Rules will be able to explain the difference to me.

Thank you in advance for any positive feedback and for taking the time to review this.

The firewall is blocking the use of a shared printer that is connected to a computer on my home Windows network. Can anyone suggest firewall rule settings to enable the use of a shared printer?

thanks,

Don

The problem started when I installed Norton 360 v1. I later upgraded to v2 and am now using Internet Security 2009 (I've had this problem for some time). I am not using any other security software or the Windows firewall. All computers on my network are using XP SP3.

thanks,Don

Hi donwx,

In the main Norton interface, open your Home Network Map. In the left column, click Network Details > "Edit".

In the new window "Edit Network Details" go to Trust Level > Edit.

Set your Network Trust Level to "Shared":

"Adds the network to the Shared list.

All traffic that your computer receives from a Shared network is filtered. Only shared resources on your computer, such as files, folders, and printers are allowed. You should select this setting if you want the firewall to protect you from all other traffics except that which pertains to file sharing and printer sharing."

The other computers on your network should inherit this setting, but please check them.

If that does not work for you, try setting your Network Trust Level to "Full Trust"

"Adds the network to the Trusted list.

All traffic that your computer receives from a Trusted network is filtered and allowed through firewall. However, known attacks and infections are still monitored. You should select this setting only when you are sure that the network is completely safe."

Let us know how you do with this.

Ta Da! Thank you very much for your quick reply, and what you posted makes plenty of sense.  Glad I learned another new thing today.  :smileyhappy:

You're welcome.  I'm glad I could help.

If you restart your computer and check the program control on the Norton firewall, there will only be a few entries if the firewall did reset. If it does not seem to have reset, try again now that you have restarted your computer.

As you were able to see the firewall settings, I can assume you are using a Windows admin account.

when I reset the smart firewall, the APPLY BUTTON remains grayed-out!  How do I know that the firewall has been reset?

Hi, andibuttri. Is your Firewall set to Auto ?

If so, you should not get these prompts as the firewall is smart enough to decide what's permissable and what's not.

Hello andibuttri

Please try the reset of the Smart Firewall and the entries will show up as you use the Firewall. Please restart your computer at least once a day. Please turn off Fast Startup. You will find the reset button in the Firewall Settings.

Thanks.
