Firewall turned off everytime I restart computer, Why?

Norton says I'm at risk....I run fix it, red x still there, run update still there, fix it again-again still there. I notice firewall off when I first start up. I run fix it, it turns it on but when I restart next time its off again. Any cure? I'm no tech

Welcome

Please tell us more about your system. Operating system? Are there  any other security products installed/running? Is this a laptop or desktop? Which version of what Norton product are you running? Is it safe to say that all of your software is up to date?

Thanks

Hello, I have old Dell 8200,running XP,80mb,Norton 360,I stay pretty updated, recents add CCleaner and treesize to help with problem below.

I have had recent trouble, Norton 360 backup went crazy filled up my c drive with over 40,000 mb. cdrive is my backup I have no external hd at this time. I would dump files it would fill. I was so full I couldn't defrag or system restore or anything really. I turned off norton backup and automatic install of updates(I do install). Dumped what files I could(games/pictures)(lowered system restore), I can move around a little bit more know went from 1% freespace at defrag to 5%.

I'm afraid to do much. Norton safe web pops up every startup and never did in past. Norton says I'm at risk at every start up. I run fix it, it finds no problems but red X never goes away. I have noticed firewall off before fix it on after but won't stay on must go thru fix it after each start up of computer.

Can I delete all files in c drive under norton 360_BACKUP 1-9 plus a-f then run backup again to be fresh? I can't tell you what the files are but there are 1000's of them.

They say a little knowledge is dangerous.........Boy am I dangerous!!

Welcome and join the club

Are you running the current version of 360? I'd like to get that working properly before trying to sort through other issues. Please download the free version of Malwarebytes scanner, install it, run the update and do a full scan. Reboot and see if things work better. It may also be necessary to go to the control panel and delete 360. Before you do that be sure to save your identity safe information. Reboot and reinstall 360.

Let us know how it goes

Hope this helps

Hi,

I am also having the same problem as johnnydp.

The firewall keeps on being turned off.

Norton 360 doesn't remember that it has done any scans, nor that it has done any of the housekeeping stuff such as Internet Explorer Tempory file cleanup, Windows Tempory Files cleanup, Disk Optimization.

I don't know how many times I have done the quick scan as requested, and I have done a full scan after downloading 60Mb plus of updates, only to be told that I am still at risk. X

I am running an older machine with a P4 3GHz processor, Windows XP Home Edition fully up to date.

Norton 360 is fully up to date. And from what I can tell has the latest patch that has been released "today".

In addition I downloaded Norton Power Eraser and ran it.

Followed the instructions to restart/reboot so that it would all work. Still had the red X

This is getting rediculous.

Can someone offer a solution?

Regards,

John

Post Script:

I have just uninstalled and reinstalled N360 and now once again I have the green Tick of approval!

But boy did that take some time getting to that point. I seem to have spent half he afternoon sitting in front of the computer.

This is actually the second time I have had to reinstall N360 since I switched over to Ver.5. Can't remember the details of why I needed to last time.

I do hope I don't need to go through this, again, any time in the near future.

Glad all is well now. If there is a problem in the future you might want to use the Norton Removal Tool after doing the control panel uninstaall to be sure that all the bits and pieces are removed before doing a new install.

One other tool I keep in the chest for 'just in case' is the free version of Malwarebytes scanner. After downloading, installing and updating I went through the tabs to be sure that it wouldn't do anything to conflict with my Norton product. The combination makes me happy and I feel safe :smileyhappy:

All that said I still have no guarantee that a 'nasty' won't creep in before sunset

Hope this helps

Just trying to let you's know I have it all working 100% better.

Downloaded Walwarebytes and ran 3 1/2 hours, found nothing....

Uninstalled Norton 360, still left norton backups so I deleted everyone manually, restarted computer, ran free up disc space then defrag, reloaded norton 360 disc, defrag & restarted again for good measure.....BINGO!  I don't know if it needed all that but I was at witts end, was looking for shotgun shells to be computer out of its misery. It took close to a full day but = Firewall stays on, free disc space is back to 50%, Norton smart web Pop-up gone! At RISK Red X gone. Norton checked....seems to be running great.

I still have NO idea what was the cause. Maybe I need a Norton to protect Norton.

Computers are truly a Love/Hate way of life.

I'm glad I posted, got me going with a couple ideas.

I'm very glad all is well

I do understand the full day and the desire for a shorgun. Personally I prefer a morter:smileywink: They won't let me play with the big guns any more.

You might want to add the free version of Superanitspyware to you tool kit. With Malwarebytes and Norton all current the occasional on demand scan by one or the other two should keep you problem free.

Thanks for the report

Hi dickevans, Super Spam Squasher!

Just a question regarding the Norton Removal Tool.

Does it remove all the settings? (I'm guessing that it does)

Also is there a way of storing the downloaded Updates and "reusing" them so they one doesn't have to download them all again.

This isn't really a problem, but it would save 120 MB or whatever of downloading. Not that that is a major problem except when getting near one's 'cap' at the end of the month.

And can you continue to run Malwarebytes after Norton is reinstalled?

I've seen instances were programs can be "in conflict" and cause problems. Isn't Norton 360 enough?

Regards,

John.

John,

When the Norton Removal Tool does its thing correctly there should be NOthing left on your hard drive that is Norton related.

There isn't any way you can 'store' the downloaded updates. The solution to that is to download the current version from the Norton server. Your existing key will work on it.

As long as you have downloaded and installed the FREE version of Malwarebytes scanner it will not cause a problem. The conflicts come in when you try to keep more than one security program 'live'. They tend to want to occupy the same spaces and do the same things at the same time so they never play well together.

If you want to add another tool to your kit you can also download the FREE version of Superantispyware. With the cap you mention you may want to space out your downloads so that you don't cramp your style.:smileywink:

I would love to say that with 360 up, running and current you will never, ever have a problem. The fact is that it is a great program written by humans and that's where the rub comes in. We aren't perfect so what we create isn't either. By having more than one scanner available you will be taking advantage of the best that many people have worked hard to make the best. The flip side of that coin says 'surf safe' Don't go where you can expect problems. There will be a 'nasty' out there that can sneak past your defences and cause problems.

A bit long but I hope it helps
