Does your computer run smoothly, e.g. it does not go slow all-of-a-sudden for no reason?

So I have a question about rundll32.exe. I notice similar posts but no real answers. So I thought I would post my specific question. Hopefully not too long winded for everyoneGuess I should give some comp info.Desk Top PC running Windows Vista Home Premium SP 1 on a DSL connection that remains on constantly. Using Norton AntiVirus 2008.  Been browsing my Norton logs which I don’t normally do.

Noticed on the activity log multiple instances of the following series of entries:

7:30:10   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:10   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:10   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:10   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:05  an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:05   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

7:30:05   an instance of c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe is preparing to access the internet

So you see multiple simultaneous preparation to access the internet and then a few seconds later another round.

This will happen when I first get on the computer after it sits unused for a few hours. Its already on, so I’m not starting up. But as soon as I move the mouse these rundll32.exe instances occur. Now it also seems to happen after my Norton AV runs a scan ( I see the Norton accessing the internet followed by rundll32.exe)

Now I know that rundll32.exe is the program that runs dll files. My Windows task manager shows two instances of rundll32.exe running and both in c:\windows\system32. So that’s cool. When I look in c:\windows\system32, I see all legit program.

I run a full Norton and SpyBot scan of those files (as well as the whole system) and nothing negative.

My Internet Browser (Internet Explorer 7) has some add on dll items such as Symantec intrusion prevention, SpyBot item So I’m wondering two things

  1.  what does this mean?
  2. just because it shows that an instance is preparing, does it maybe mean that it did not access thus needing multiple attempts?
  3. Any other malicious issues that might be associated with this?
Now let me add that I see no other strange happenings such as shut downs, loss of control, etc. Nothing that would signify a problem.

I believe you can find the answer to your question about rundll32.exe in the following thread:

Bottom line: it looks like those log messages are nothing to worry about.
