First time using Norton Ghost & Need some Advise

Hi All

I’ve purchased (retail – 1 English CD & 1 French CD in the box) Norton Ghost v 15 and installed it on my Desktop PC running Win XP Prof SP3. I should add that this is the first backup software I’ve ever purchased, never have backed up the computer before, only individual files/folders using copy to a USB Flash drive.

I will be backing up to a Verbatim Smartdisk 500 GB EHD that I will be reformatting to NTFS.

Now, I’m reading the Ghost instructions and one of the first things I should do is “test Symantec Recovery Disk”.

            To test Symantec Recovery Disk

1 Run the driver validation tool to test whether Symantec Recovery Disk works

with the network cards and storage devices on the computer.

2 Start your computer using the Symantec Recovery Disk CD.

See “Starting a computer by using Symantec Recovery Disk” on page 174.

3 When you have started Symantec Recovery Disk, do one of the following:

■ If you want to store recovery points on a network, run a mock restore of

a recovery point that is stored on a network to test the network connection.

■ If you want to store recovery points on a computer, run a mock restore of

a recovery point that is stored locally to test the local hard drive

connection.

Ok, this is a personal computer, not on a network, so my question pertains to the last point – “run a mock restore of a recovery point….”    Do I first have to create a recovery point using Norton Ghost? Then I try booting the PC from the CD following the Norton instruction manual? Note: I’ve never booted from a drive, so far I’ve been lucky. I am also deathly afraid of DOS because I don’t understand it.

Further on in the manual it states:

            If driver validation fails

The driver validation test verifies whether the drivers for all storage devices and

network cards in use by the computer are available in Symantec Recovery Disk.

If the drivers are available on the recovery disk, you receive a validation message.

If any drivers are not included on the recovery disk, the DriverValidationResults

dialog box appears.

Do I also have to attach the EHD via USB cable to the PC since it will be my “storage device” before running this test?

I’m sorry if these are silly questions, but I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t want to lose my C drive because I didn’t understand something. I’m not computer savvy, I am trying to learn all this computer lingo (it’s like learning a new language!).

Thanks in advance for any help/advise/guidance you can offer this (older) newbie.
