Fix for norton error 8504,104

I've looked around for a while for a fix for this problem, but nothing sticks.  The solution of "uninstall / reinstall" works but the issue comes back in weeks or months, and I have a gap in my virus protection in the time it takes me to notice that Norton is no longer running, plus the inconvenience of rebooting.  These are some links that describe the problem.

I am running windows 7, latest updates, lenovo x220 PC laptop, standard hardware.  This problem has persisted for the year I've had Norton.
