run it. Have a lot of patience. It goes though like 100 stages and reboots but it works.

I addressed this in a separate thread, albeit perhaps with too much diplomatic finesse.
What Quads said - do NOT use ComboFix.exe without expert tutelage and supervision.
If it's a problem with Microsoft (or Windows) Update, then it's most probably a Windows problem, not an AV software issue. Try the solutions on Microsoft's support website. For issues with Windows/Microsoft Update in Win XP, see KB 943144. Try the Microsoft Fixit tool first (it will pop-up when you go to the web page. It's so simple that even a caveman or my brain-damaged nephew can use.
