Today 1-27-13 I noticed Norton Internet Security shows a > symbol on the lower right icon under hidden icons. When I open Norton it shows a continuous "fix in progress" but never completes. Live update does complete when I manually do this but last update still shows two days ago. Reboots do not change this status.
I went to manage my account to download Norton again but am unsuccessful as run will not commence. Status shows everything OK under manager. This is a Windows 8 Laptop. Account shows good through January 16 2014. Computer seems fine other than this.
Unsure how to proceed at this point. Firewall status and antivirus still shows controlled by Norton under windows control panel.

Welcome, My only guess to repair under the circumstances that you describe would be to run the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool
Fortunately this morning when I turned on the computer Norton icon had a " ! " symbol next to it in the hidden icons section. I opened Norton up and it said "fix now". I clicked "fix now" and it ran a quick scan successfully. It reports it removed 19 cookies which I do not think is a big deal. I now have the secure block in green and the green check on the hidden icon.
I remember yesterday now that it started out this way with the "!" symbol but when I clicked "fix now" it just hanged with a "fix in progress" for hours with no resolution and no way out that I could find. Maybe Norton's servers were down for maintenance when I first performed the operation.
This is the first issue I've had with norton in the two months I've had the computer. Being Windows 8 I guess I can expect a few things.
Would this work for Cancel in progress? I tried that when Fix in progress hung the manchine and Cancel did the same thing, that is, nothing. Happening today as I write.
Peter, I did restart the computer several times to no avail including shut down and reboot. Scan did not work either that day. Manual updates did work but would still show last update two days ago. The next day Norton was able to heal itself. I have McAffee on my old computer and have gone through similar things. Sometimes waiting is the best option. Between the interaction of all the applications running on todays machines and the continuous assault of cybercrime I do not think full testing is being done before software releases.
