Folder Lock program sent an .exe in email and I clicked on it, is it safe

I have a program called Folder Lock version 7.6.4 and it seems to be a good program. It is a paid version, do I need to be aware of any malware it may have?  Also when I clicked check for updates it brought me to a screen with update information but no way to update them without installing the newer version. I sent an email to the company asking how to update without reinstalling the newer version. The company is New Softwares.net security products and the email was sent by Michelle Rossevelt, Manager Customer Support.  This is what the email said.

"Without uninstalling your current Folder Lock, download and install the latest version 7.8.0 from the given link; http://www.newsoftwares.net/download/folderlock7-en/folder-lock-en.exe
This would solve your issue."

I didn't even notice it was a .exe file until I clicked on it and nothing appeared to have happened.  I have Google Gmail and Norton 360 on Windows 10 all updated versions, so I am assuming one of them blocked the .exe from executing.  Am I correct with this? Does anyone know anything about this company and if I should have any concerns with using Folder Lock. The program got good reviews from many, which appear to be good sources. I just bought the full version from Amazon and but the download was a 2017 version. 

My questions are 1. Is my computer safe from the attempt to open the .exe? 2. Is this a safe program from a reputable company? 3. How do I update Folder Lock from the link, do I just type that into my search on Google Chrome. Would that be safe?

  1. Start by running a full system scan with your Norton 360. Then I would suggest a second opinion scan using the FREE version of Malwarebytes. You can find it here https://www.malwarebytes.com/premium/  If both come back clear, you should be OK.

  3. The best way to update an app is from the app itself. Some apps do just install a new version, deleting the old as part of the update process.
