Folders/docs visible but ghosted

Strange problem:

All of the folders and docs on my desktop are 'ghosted.' These are not ghost items, but the regular items I have always had on my desktop. I can open the folders and the docs, but I cannot save new versions of them in the same places though I can save and create new folders and docs and they do not suffer from this problem.

Not sure what caused this but today my Altec Lansing PC got a virus. The Realtek_AC97.exe. However, I never downloaded the program and was able to restore my computer to an earlier setting which seemed to resolve the problem.

In the midst of combatting the virus, I started the Norton backup and it completed the storage calculation but I shut down the computer while it was in the midst of transferring the data, so the backup was not completed. After rebooting the computer in safemode and restoring it, I started the backup again but after running for over six hours it never went past transferring 2% of data (I have under 5GB of data).

Are the folders and files possibly in this 'ghost' state due to somehow being suspended in some Norton version of Hades? How can I resolve this? Will 'removing the computer' from the Norton system set it free?
