As I mentioned in a post from a few days ago, our popular media gets enormous mileage out of the online predator danger. Today's FoxNews story offers a great deal of good advice, mixed in with hype and fear mongering. Some of the good elements in the story include typical techniques of a sexual predator and common behavioral and social issues of predator victims.
There's a good dose of alarmist thinking as well. If you read the story, please focus on the advice areas and don't get overwhelmed by the statistics for the numbers of sexual predators who are online. It's highly unlikely your child will ever encounter them, unless they are at risk and enter chat rooms or IM with strangers.
There are minor errors as well. The author indicates a parent can "print out" text messages from your child's cell phone. That is only true if you have the phone in hand and have the passwords. Ideally, and I've mentioned this to a few in the cellular industry, we parents would have an option to have text messages sent to an online account or copied to the parent's phone. I would pay extra to have such a service, even if we only used it occasionally. Then we could monitor texting without having to get the cell phone and do so even from the office.
