Full system scans take a long time

I ran a full system scan today 5/08/10, or tried to. It's been running about 5 hours, over 400,000 files scanned. I ran this last on 4/24/10, and it took 3-4 hours. Time before that it took maybe 6 or more hours. I haven't been monitoring the computer, just figured I'd let it run. I saw the message in the lower right corner of the screen saying that a full scan is running, similar to the messae I get when something runs while the comp is idle. So I'm wondering if Norton detects a system idle and starts a full scan while I have a full scan already going? And if that restarts it, or what ever, and causes a longer time for the scan to run? Not sure what's going on, or how I should better be doing scans, or any settings, to make Norton more efficient for me. Any ideas, info would be welcome.

What Norton product are you using now and what year and version is it? What operating system and service pack are you using? Do you have any other real time security programs running now.? You should have the idle time scans set to weekly. They should run every 7 days from the time you installed the program. If it is doing an idle full system scan, it will start when the computer is idle and will continue until it isn't idle any longer. You can set the idle time down to 1 minute, so that the scan starts sooner and it doesn't have to wait as long to start. When the automatic scanner gets interrupted, it will start up again when the computer is idle and it will start from where it left off. If you have your computer doing a full scan so haphazardly, it will take longer to do it. Ideally it should be set to do idle scans weekly or else set the scheduled scans to occur weekly. That will cut down the time and number of files that have to be scanned.

 

An Idle full system scan should not be going on at the same time. When you schedule a scan, that disables the idle full system scan, but the idle quick scans will still occur. You can not disable those.

I'm using Vista, SP 2. Norton Internet Security 2010; no other security programs running, Win Defender is off. Idle scans are set to weekly.

Idle scans do run when the computer is idle, so that seems to be going ok. I figured that would cause the full scans to go faster, have less to scan? I guess that doesn't matter.
