I run on a WinXp Home system with Outlook Express as the mail client.
Do to some errors that have occured I have lost a number of folders and messages (as well as the way I had the folder tree setup) in Outlook Express. Luckily (I think) the program just a few days ago asked it I wanted to let it compress the Outlook files and after doing so I have .bak files in the Recycle Bin. I am wondering if I can simply copy the .bak files back into the proper (whatever it may be) sub-directory and have everything back to normal? I am hoping that no registry keys or anything else needs to be done.
I would experiement however running XP home I may not have other options if I mess something up as Restore does not seem to readily work for me, XP Home does not have the ability to use the ASR to restore registry hives and I don't have any file backup software so doing things correct mean a lot to me :)
Also I have done a search of the hard drive and it shows that in the sub-dir of Docum~1/username/Application data/Identities/{x-x-x-x-} files such as Sent items.dbx (553MB), Sent items(1).dbx (33MB) & Sent items(2).dbx (75Kb), the largest [sent items.dbx] is only a few minutes older than the #3 file however it is much larger and if all I need to do is to take files such as this and put it into (some directory) and it will restore that particular file to this morning when the issue occurred?
Also, if not all the previous mail folder are located in either the trash bin or able to be found in xxxxx(1).dbx type files as the beforementioned subdirectory is there any where else I can go to recover the messages/folder that were lost this morning. I do have Norton Utilities 15 on the system however that has it's own set of issues and is not dependable or sometimes even running, at the moment.
Thank you very much knowledgeable people!
