After installing Norton 360, Spybot search & destroy terminated a process listed as part of a malicious software. File name GEARDIFx.exe found in c:\program files\norton 360\engine\4.1.0.32.  Is this file safe?

GEARDIFx.exe belongs to the CD/DVD authoring software that Norton 360 uses to backup to CDs and DVDs.  To prevent these sorts of conflicts you should not run additional realtime security software while using Norton 360.  Spybot Search and Destroy is an on-demand scanner that can be installed alongside Norton safely, but you need to disable the TeaTimer feature, which runs in realtime and can prevent Norton from making necessary periodic system modifications that it needs in order to work properly.
