A good place to start is to contact our Customer Support team, through the following site:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp
Select Norton Ghost 12.0 as you product, and choose your preferred communication method. Having a Support technician check out your system would probably be a much easier way to diagnose this issue. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Thanks!
well, i went to technical service, and there was nothing there to help me, actually, not much there at all. so i clicked to chat with a technician online. i got the page that said it was preparing to download the software required to chat onto my computer, then the page was blank. i tried multiples, on multiple computers, and the page is blank, everywhere. the problem isnt that i wasnt using internet explorer, i was using IE, and it sill didnt work. while i would like to know if there is something wrong on my side that is causing this problem, i would appreciate if you could just give me some help on this forum, as this seems to be the only working medium of contact.
Well, I contacted customer support, and chatted with a representative. After reinstalling a .NET package, and having me reinstall ghost, I was told that my problem would be gone. Unfortunately, it is not. Adding to my worries, it appears that something happened, because right after I restarted my PC after installing ghost, I know receive a INVALID BOOT.INI error before windows loads. Even more interestingly, windows still loads, and I’m still having the same problem. Anymore suggestions, please?
How many partitions do you have? Do you have any boot screen skinning applications installed? Could you copy the contents of your boot.ini and post? Are you still receiving the Just In Time Java crashes still?
Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, it is a bit late now. I had already manually backed up all my files through windows explorer, as I was paranoid about the invalid boot.ini error message. Which was lucky, because several hours later, windows did not load. I have since reinstalled windows, sans all my programs, and am currently going about reinstalling all of them. I am having big misgivings about reinstalling ghost, though.
It sounds like your system was very unstable. The JIT crash is usually caused when .Net is corrupt. Since you've reinstalled Windows (I'm assuming you performed a format first) have you noticed the system behaving more smoothly? If so, you should be fine with reinstalling everything. Hopefully to alleviate any of your concerns I wanted to let you know that Ghost does not modify the Boot.ini when you install. The only times the Boot.ini will be modified by Ghost is if you do the following:
- perform the "Drive Copy" function and set the new drive to boot (this will set up the boot.ini and partition table on the new drive)
- Go into the Symnatec Recovery Disk and choose to edit the Boot.ini
Before you get too far along, I would strongly recommend that you perform diagnostics on your system. Ensure that your HDD is not encountering too many errors by running the Hard Drive manufacturers utility scans. Check your RAM. There are times where system corruption is contributed by bad RAM. Hopefully this helps.
Erik,
I'm having the exact same issues. My machine is an Acer Aspire 5670, with XP SP3. I reinstalled the .Net software, and reinstalled Ghost 12. After this I ran the Live update. Whatever I do, the issue keeps coming back.
BTW I checke dmy hard drive for errors, and I checked the RAM on my machine; no issues there.
Can anyone please help me out on this. The issue is not only annoying, but it also prevents me from backing up my system. I really like Ghost, and would love to use it again...
Regards,
Aad
Aad,
What version(s) of .Net did you reinstall? It's possible that you may have more than one application using .Net. Check you windows event viewer for errors.
I have the Framework 1.1, the 1.1 hotfix, and the 2.0 installed. The event viewer doesn't show any errors.
How doe I check if there are other apps using .Net at the same time?
Did you look at application and system as well? The only way of checking unfortunately is to review your installed applications and check. Could you copy and paste the complete error message you are experiencing?
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. Configuration system failed to initialize.
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging=“true” />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

Hi Aad,
I've sent you an email about this issue. Please provide the requested information. Thanks!
I've got the the same error with Ghost 14.
What can I do ?
We can certainly use more help. I’ve sent you an email requesting logs from your system; our team will review the logs for the cause of the issue. Thanks!
