Well, the plot thickens. But I figured I'd at least post what happened in case someone else needs help.
About 15 minutes ago, my CD popped out (and startled me), and I got a message saying the Recovery CD creation process was complete. This was the one I started when I posted this morning...8 hours ago. So, basically, it took 8 hours, yes, 8 hours to create the recovery CD. And I would've never, ever expected to wait *that* long for it - but since I couldn't "cancel" the operation without rebooting, I just minimized the window while I was working with the intent to reboot later.
I tested the CD, and it seems to work fine.
So, *my* problem evidently is solved (thanks to, well, me). But I read other reports across the 'net indicating that people were having the same problem - and just like me, none of them evidently thought it would take 1/3 of a day to make a CD. And I have a really fast machine that was top of the line when I bought it less than a year ago. I never in my wildest dreams thought it would've been faster to chisel the ISO in rock than to burn a CD. So, for giggles, I just created a DVD with a bunch of video files - pretty much filled it up. Took less time to burn that than to type this message. So, I don't think it's a burner issue (especially when I had the same problem just trying to write the ISO to the hard drive - when I have another 8 hours to kill, I'll try that again).
Weird.
This does seem a bit strange. What are the details of the CD/DVD drive you are using? What type of media are you using? This information will help us reproduce this issue here. Thanks!
I experienced the same prob. After a lot of investigation I found that the original install version is already updated during the install process so one will have another version installed than on the install disk (if ya agree with the update). When one prevents that and just let the very first install version on your pc one can make the cd without any problem (I did anyway). As soon as the version is updated thru live update (and it will automatically) it wont work anymore.
Guess its not like it should be but at least it worked for me. I also did a chat consult on it but they could not really help me.
Moved message to its own thread for better exposure.
Like the subject says, I can't create a recovery CD. I have the full-blown off-the-shelf version, and I know that I *can* use the install CD (in fact, that was Symantec's soultion - "just use the CD that came with the package"), but I want to create one that has the correct drivers and all that.
When I attempt to create the CD, everything goes along as it should, until it gets to the actual "creating disk image" portion. Then it just looks at me. I've let it sit as long as 2 hours, and it never gets past 0%. I've tried different CD media, DVD media, formatted and right out of the spindle, and on two different burners, both of which I know work.
I contacted tech support over the weekend. Gave the tech control of my desktop, watched him fumble around for 90 minutes, and then reboot my machine - which killed the connection (evidently) and I never heard anything else until today, when I got the generic "How's our service" email.
I've googled, and read one or two reviews from people who have had the same problem - but no solutions offered.
Any suggestions? I'm running Vista, Ghost 12.0.3.24711. I also have Norton Internet Security & Anti-Virus (all updated regularily). The backups seem to be working just fine, but this recovery disk thing is driving me up a wall.
Thanks!
I have experimented with this some more, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the actual process of burning the disk. I tried to create an ISO file on my hard drive, and it did exactly the same thing - got to the point of creating the ISO, and just sat there. I let it sit for over an hour, and it never got over 0%.
Additionally, the dialog box indicating the image is being created cannot be closed. Can't end it with the Task Manager, can't hit the X in the upper right, can't right click the app in the task bar to close. The only way to make it go away is to reboot. This is true whether I'm trying to burn straight to CD/DVD, or creating an ISO on the hard drive.
Although it appears that the backups are working correctly, having this kind of problem with what should be one of the most basic features of the software makes me wonder if I'm actually getting good backup data.
