4 gig, but I think that Vista can only use 3. Not sure I want to spend the $ for Ghost 15 at this point, at least until I figure out what is happening with 12.

That should certainly be plenty of memory. Try downloading the Ghost 15 SRD that I linked. You do not have to pay to download it. Of course you can not make a cold backup without a license but should not have any trouble verifying / restoring images made with Ghost 12. Another thing you might do is to remove one of the memory sticks. Maybe it is erroring out because of your motherboard / memory combination.
Can you tell me more about what happens when you try to run the Ghost 12 SRD? Does it error out before it is finshed loading or is it after it has loaded?
Also, does anyone know what version of WinPE Ghost 12 is based on? Is there a .\sources\boot.wim file on the recovery disc?
Ghost 12 is based on the original Vista release 6.0.6000
Ghost 15 is Vista SP1 6.0.6001
I will install Ghost 12 on Vista and see if I get any errors, I don't expect any because I have used G12 since release and at the moment it is running on Win7 with no problems.

Just installed G12 on Vista and ran a backup of C:\ 5.87 gig completed in 4:24 mins. See pic
There must be an App on the laptop that is conflicting with G12,
I know Red won't agree with this but I would be inclined to run fdisk, delete the drive, reinstall the O/S only and then install G12 and run a backup because there is nothing wrong with G12.

*.wim dated 3-28-07, 147 mb. Ghost 12 version is 12.0.5.29804.

Hey Deric,
I think the only problem paullady is having is with the recovery environment. I agree, there is probably nothing wrong with Ghost 12, I have never used that version. That's why I was curious if the recovery environment was XP based (like Ghost 10) or Vista based.
At this point, if paullady can backup and verify the image is good, I would try the Ghost 15 SRD or try removing one stick of memory. Maybe there is something about that version of WinPE that cannot handle 4GB of RAM.
Never a dull moment! This time SRD finally ran, after hour glassing for about 5 mins at startup. What confused me was that when I looked for files, all I saw were *.zip in the view I was using. When I used the browse function, I saw the files and the backup was successful into my current Vista system. That's all gud, and thx to you guys holding my hand.
Here's my next puzzle. My Dell bios allows selection of the sata drive to boot from. When I boot from the drive where I had previously "backup, cloned, whatever - I really don't remember now", it boots to something that looks like the pre-crash Vista, but without all the programs, Office 2007 most important missing instance. The user profile is missing, I'm not yet sure about the data, but the missing programs and the messed up preferences, etc are the mystery. What's going on here? Is there a chance that I can get back to the original Vista configuration with all the programs working?
Thx again for the help, my Ghost faith is restored. BTW, I did not see the 15 copy attached, need a clue. Will I need to burn a disk to use it?

I'm slow, but I eventually get there. I found the 15 link, I'm good.

Hi Red,
To be honest Ghost 12 is very good, in the past I have tried it on all O/S and older hardware and has never given me a problem, all I was trying to do is eliminate the software problem.
His last post indicates that the backup is solved,I only hope now that Paul fully understands what Ghost is all about and supports Ghost 12 as I do.
Ghost 12 will run on XP, Vista and Win7 as far as Win7 is concerned when installing G12 a warning comes up about a compatibility problem, just ignor it and install.
The only advantage with G15 is you can run a "Cold" backup and it does run quicker and the settings are a little bit more complicated than G12.
