Ghost 14.0 Serious Problem

I have just encountered (and solved) a very scary problem created by the convergence of three factors:

(1.) Full hard drive "clone" backups created with Ghost 14, and

(2.) Recent OS upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3, and

(3.) Norton Live Update of the Ghost software to version 14.0.3.28361.

If you have all three of these conditions --- clone drives created under these circumstances may NOT actually boot up your PC.  The data may all be there, and everything may appear in order.  But, if you actually install one of these drives in your laptop or PC, the boot up process will run for about 60 seconds, then lock up with no way to recover.  I had four clone backup drives which I thought were my ultimate backup.  I installed and tested each one and they all turned out to be worthless as primary drives.  I never had any problems with Ghost 14.0 until the two above software upgrades.

I don't know which software is the culprit, Ghost or Windows, but I did find a way to get around the problem.  Before you run the Ghost cloning operation, delete all existing partitions on the destination hard drive.  Then, run Ghost with C: as the source and \unallocated as the destination.  This will work perfectly, but I have no idea why.   Good luck, Bill.
