Ghost 14 "automatically optimize without prompting me" does not work

I'm running Ghost 14 under Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit.

Despite setting limits in jobs, setting threshold of disk space to half of that of the backup destination and selecting "automatically optimize without prompting me" I'm forever running out of hard disk space on my external hard disk.

The only thing I can do when performing a "Clean up...." is delete all the recovery sets for any given backup job/partition instead of just the oldest ones. I set for example on my system partiton backup a limit of 10 backup sets yet when I run "Clean up..." it tells me I have 24 and that I can only delete them all.

What gives?

How do I get the software to correctly optimize the backup destination without compromising the backup sets I wish to keep. i.e. the most recent. Up until know I've been deleting all the recovery points and effectively starting over but in doing so I'm losing months of backups I'd rather keep. Surely the backups can be managed in a FIFO way without any user intervention?

TIA
