Ghost 14 -- Can it be booted only when needed? Or from a USB hard drive,CD, DVD, or flash drive?

I run Norton Ghost 14.0.5.34587 on Windows XP SP3.

I save my backups on a USB external hard drive, which I connect to the computer only when I'm making or restoring a backup.

I would like to stop Ghost from starting when I boot my computer. I want to be able to start Ghost only when I need to make or restore a backup or use the Ghost browser.

Is it possible to install Ghost 15 onto my external hard drive, a CD, a DVD, or a flash drive and then use it to boot the program when I need it?

Is it possible to configure the program itself not to boot until told to do so?

In addition to what Deric said, you can also make a bootable UFD (USB Flash Drive).

If you don't want it to start with windows it needs to be disabled in 2 places.

Go to Start > Run and type in:  services.msc

Stop the Norton Ghost service and then set it to manual

Then run msconfig, under the startup tab disable VProTray

After you reboot, Ghost will not start automatically but will open when you use the shortcut.

Bless you, DaveH. :smileyhappy:

One more question: Will this still work if I move all the files and subfolders in C:\Program Files\Norton Ghost to a CD or flash drive?

If you move the program folder it wil not work from either location and your going to encounter problems with windows.

DaveH:

OK, it's fine where it is.

One last question (I hope): When I boot Windows I get this warning:

I read this to mean I'll have to put up with this screen at every Windows boot-up in order to exclude Ghost. I can live with that, but I'd like to eliminate this warning, if that's possible.

Anyway, things are working fine as they are now. Many thanks.

Just check that box to not show the message anymore.

If you ever want to change it back to the way it was you can reselect in msconfig and set the service back to auto.
