I have Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit and I use a DLink DNS-323 to back up my machine daily.

Right now, the NAS has one full back up of my machine of 67GB and one incremental of 1.2GB.  That's it.  Just two files.  And today is the day for a 2nd incremental backup.  Well, after 3 hours of "Reconciling Volume" and maxing out my network bandwidth, NG14 is still "Reconciling Volume" and maxing out my network bandwidth.  And the progress is stuck at 1%.

What is Ghost doing that is taking so ungodly long for an incremental that should be short and fast?  A full backup would be done by now.

I apologize for the delay in reply. After searching the Symantec Knowledge base for the problem, I came across this article:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/powerquest.nsf/0/3b710b693a1ef4a2ca256fe0007ab029

This refers to Norton Ghost 9, which may not apply (unless you've upgraded).  Have you checked your disk for bad sectors? Norton Ghost 14 allows the user to analyze the drive for bad sectors:

1) In the Analyze panel, click Check Hard Disks for Errors.

2) Select the drive that you want to check.

3) Select any of the following options:

    - Automatically fix file system errors

Fixes errors on the selected disk. When this option is not selected, errors are displayed but are not fixed

     - Find and correct bad sectors

Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information

4) Click Start.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hi Tony,

I did check for bad sectors and nothing came up.  However, I have an idea and your input may determine if that was the case or not.

Before the incremental backup that took forever and was as large as the full one, I activated the "Lights Out" feature on my drive.  My question to you is: does this feature involves a partition change that would trigger a larger-than-usual incremental backup of the drive?

Hi MarcP,

Yes it would; it actually creates a bootable recovery image on the drive. Norton Ghost LightsOut Restore lets administrators restore a computer from a remote location. This certainly would explain why things were taking so long. When you chose this option, was it for a specific reason? Did you review the steps necessary for creating and restoring such an image?

I chose this step because:

1- It allows me to boot into NGhost without the use of the bootable CD

2 - It creates a custom bootable recovery OS based on the CD and using the drivers I have on my live system.  Therefore ensuring access to my network and USB devices.

I know that other products like Acronis True Image do that as well (i.e. altering the partition to allow a boot manager to offer a recovery option without a CD).  That's why I asked is NGhost was doing the same with Lights Out.  That would explain the larger incremental image as it's seen as a rather large change.

So my question has been answered.  Thanks! :)

After almost 4 hours of "Reconciling Volume", NG14 started doing the incremental backup and reported 79 hours remaining.

I gave up...
