Ghost 14: HP dv3 1075us....64bit. Won't boot from NG CD

I've been having a lot of issues with Norton Ghost and my HP dv3 1075us (Vista Home premium 64bit).

--First is the creating a custom Recovery Disk...(I did use 32 bit drivers only..one NIC 32bit and a 32bit storage driver). but it seems incompatiable with my slot loading DVD drive.

I get errors:

E7D60007 --Can't locate GEAR device

000009CE --The image was not generated from an MS-DOS diskette formatted with /S. ????

The next screen then says:

E7D60017 --Could not eject device ".

I don't have an virtual drives...this pretty much a brand new machine that i want to image before putting Windows 7 on it. (And make sure that Norton works).

--So I gave up making a custom disk and decided to try to boot off the NG14 CD.  That did work all up into it seems to get to a main page and then a memory error appeared and rebooted the system.

It just seems Norton Ghost simply does not work with 64-bit HP notebooks.  Here's some info:

I've had exactly the same error on windows Vista X64.

I am really frustrated with this because I need a custom SRD to support my NIC.

Initially after I installed Ghost 14.0 my CD rom Disappered and I was unable to reload the drivers windows was reporting a error 39. which I later found was a invalid registry entry that was put there by the Ghost instller.

Registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D365E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The invalid key was in the upper filters entry and it was pointing to a GEAR driver that was not verified. That was causing the problem.

After deleting that registry entry I got my CD ROM working again, but now I get an error when I try to create a custom_SRD.

I hope symantec fix this problem soon...

thanks for the tip about the filters....but as you can see from my registry...I don't thave those keys (shouldn't they be there?).  Is there a way to rewrite them in there?

EDIT:  uninstalling-reinstalling the device didn't rewrite the keys.

I had trouble with the upper filters entry and as I also found the lower filters entry can also affect the operation of the CD ROM.

I guess that if you don't have those key entries then it dosen't matter, as long as nothing is broken in the software or functionality of your system. In my case (which I thought was a little odd) those entries caused me grief.

As far as I know Windows Vista will not load drivers that are not digitaly signed or so I have read somewhere...

This is the Ghost error I get when I try to Create a Custom SRD after I have deleted the upper filters entry.

I've actually had some success here....take a look:

CustomSRD.jpeg

I downloaded new Gear 'drivers' from here:  http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php (click on "driver downloads)

the .exe did it's thing and I had a new entry in my device....(see the signed driver...)

Ran norton Custom Recovery Disk and it seems to have worked!

speaking of work though.....I gotta get going.  I'll test it later tonight.

Update:  Tested and succesful in:

--Booting from NG14 CD.

--Created a Custom SRD.

--Booting from Custom SRD.

My HP is now doing a backup so i can nuke the darn Vista Home Premium and get something useful on there.

It looks like it was the GEAR software (that I didn't even know existed as driver software).

case closed.

Brilliant it totally worked for me too.

Problem Solved....

:smileyvery-happy:

unfortunately....I have the same issue again. This time I'm running Vista Enterprise Service Pack 2, 64-bit.

The gear drivers now won't install at all....the gear drivers were the unsigned ones...and wouldn't update to the signed ones at all.

So now here's the procedure to remove the driver:

http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php?title=Remove_drivers#Removing_GEAR_Drivers:

Vista 64-bit

Select Run... in the START menu, and type in regedit
This will start up the Registry Editor.

Delete the following key from the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\GearAspiWDM

In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} key remove the GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{6D807884-7D21-11CF-801C-08002BE10318} key remove the GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

In the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{CE5939AE-EBDE-11D0-B181-0000F8753EC4} key remove the GEARAspiWDM entry in the UpperFilters value. Note that the entries in this value are double byte.

Reboot

Delete GearAspi.dll (32bit) from the Window\SysWOW64 folder

THIS IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS. I can't delete GearAspi.dll because 'I need permisson to continue'

Delete GEARAspi64.dll (64bit) from the Windows\System32 folder

Delete GearAspiWDM.sys (64bit) from the Windows\System32\Drivers folder

If present, delete the Windows\System32\GEARAspi.dll value from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

If present, delete the Windows\SysWOW64\GEARAspi.dll value from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

Delete the Windows\System32\GEARAspi64.dll value from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

Delete the Windows\System32\Drivers\GearAspiWDM.sys value from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs registry key

Reboot

Now nothing happens if I reinstall the Gear software...and my keys are gone.  I don't think GEAR will talk to me unless I buy a product....any way to get the driver completely uninstalled so I try again?
