I set up Lights Out Restore using my Ghost 14 release CD.  But when I tried to test it by booting into the Lights Out Restore environment I get this error: OXC000000F - :The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

Can anyone advise me how to proceed?

Thanks,

Ron

OS is Windows XP Pro.  The drive is not encrypted and there are no other OS's installed.

Thanks!

If you are unable to boot your computer using LightsOut Restore, it could be because your operating
system resides on a drive formatted to FAT32. Please check the file system.

The file system is NTFS.

Thanks!

I don't have a definitive answer yet on what can cause this.  From what I have find out so far on this error, it sounds like Windows could not find something it needed in the boot process -- either a file it needed during the boot such as the winload.exe or a driver.  When you ran the driver validation, did it say you needed any drivers?

No, it didn’t ask for any addiitonal drivers.  I just mounted the Ghost 14 CD.  Is it possible that the Ghost 14 CD is out of date?  Is there a file I could use when it asks where the recovery CD is located?

No, the CD is current – the WinPE that is the basis for the SRD does not change that often.  However, we need to separate the boot from the Lights Out to see if the problem is in the setup of Lights Out or with a driver.  I would suggest running through the Create Recovery Disk wizard and choose Custom.  When it asks for a disk, use the SRD that came with Ghost.  This will create a new recovery CD.  It will also pull the drivers currently running on your machine.  Then when this is done, try booting with the new CD.  Based on the results of this we know which piece we need to start looking at to resolve the problem.

I can make a new recovery CD.  That will be no problem.  Unfortunately, something about the BIOS in my machine prevents me from booting from CD.  The last time I was forced to restore on an emergency basis, Dell walked me through recabling the machine so it would boot and then, after the restore completed, had me recable the machine again.  The reason I want to get Lights Out to work is to avoid that exercise in the future..

Can I make the new CD and then recreate the Lights Out environment?

Hmmm.... What model of Dell do you have?  I'm going to have to do some checking on the rebuilding of the Lights Out environment as that is something I haven't done...yet.  I will also have to do some research on the machine and see if whatever is preventing you from booting from a CD will affect Lights Out.  I don't expect it will since it most likely is a true bios limitation or the fact they have the CD cabled as a slave.

Never-the-less, building a custom recovery CD  will be a worth while exercise as it could be used instead of the original when setting up Lights Out.

The Dell is an 8400 I purchased in 2005.  The BIOS on this machine is pretty flakey.  So, I'll create a recovery CD as you suggested and wait to hear how to overwrite the Lights Out environment from you.

Thanks!

OK, the preferred method to remove Lights Out is to go to the Home page in Ghost and choose Tasks | Remove Lights Out.  If that does not work, holler and we'll work through the manual method the developer gave me today.  Once it is removed, try setting up Lights Out again using the new CD you created.

As to your specific machine and its BIOS issues, I have not found anything in my reading today that would suggest any reason for Lights Out not to work. I still find it strange about not being able to boot from a CD, but that is a side issue.

Hello Johan,

I removed Lights Out and rebooted the machine to make sure it was gone.  I then made a recovery CD.  It seemed to work and even "auto played" the Ghost 14 install screen when done.  I tried to test it but when booting my computer could not find the CD drive.

Then I used the recovery CD to create the new Lights Out".  When I tested it I got the same error message (OXC000000F - The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible).

PMJI but that's usually a setting in the PC BIOS so that it looks for a bootable disk on the CD Drive before starting to boot from the hard drive.

Excuse if well known to you <s>

Can you provide more information on this, such as your OS, whether your drive is encrypted or not, if more than one OS are installed..
