Ghost 14 stuck at 1%

I have used Ghost 14 for well over two years and, aside from occasional hiccups, it has done incremental images for me very well until some few months ago when backups began sticking at 1%.  The only solution has been to reboot because it seems impossible to cancel the backup session.  Then I must delete all my Ghost images from my backup destination and can then successfully create a new base image in about 2 hours.  Thereafter, I may go a few days of scheduled incremental images just fine but then the 1% issue recurs.  Just to see what would happen, I've let a current backup session run for close to 36 hours and it is showing 2% completion.  I'll let it go another day just to see what happens.

I use Win XP SP3 on an older PC with a 2.1 GHz processor and 2GB of memory.  I have 8GB of Page Memory between two HDD's.  My OS is a new retail installation of Win XP on a new 320GB SATA 1 HDD.  This problem was also happening with the old HDD and previous OEM version of Win XP.  My backup destination is a 500GB IDE HDD formatted NTFS which is used solely for Ghost images of the SATA drive.  This setup worked fine for me for probably 2 years before this problem developed.  I schedule incremental images daily and schedule a new base weekly.  This is what I have done for at least 2 years without any serious problems until this issue popped up.

I've read all I can find on this problem but have not read of any solutions as yet.  Does anyone know if this is a situation which can actually be fixed?  I suspect some Microsoft update has conflicted with Ghost but am too ignorant to have any real basis for saying that.  I've no idea what else might have changed to cause this problem.  My version of Ghost is the newest update for Ghost 14 according to Live Update.

If no definite fix for this problem is known, does anyone know if upgrading to Ghost 15 would be a definite solution?

Thank You.
