Hi Don,
I have sent you a Private Message - PM (accessible through the yellow envelope in the upper right-hand corner of the forums) with steps to create the logs and a location to upload. Please let us know when you have finishing sending the logs. Thanks!
Tony,
Done. I also responded to your PM.
Regards, Dan
Tony,
There appears to be a newer Ghost update that is 26MB in size. This update also fails with an LU1812 error.
Is there a chance of this getting corrected, or should I just give it up as a lost cause? If Symantec can't fix the problem, can I get a refund for Ghost 14? I also have a copy of Acronis that I uninstalled that I can always go back to, but I would prefer to use Ghost because I like it a bit better.
Regards, Dan
Certainly not a lost cause. We’re still checking out this issue, and we thank you for your continued patience. We will update this thread when we get more information on the problem. Thanks!
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 system with SP1 installed. I installed Ghost 14 on a rebuilt system (catastrohpic failure). After installation, Live Update shows an 18MB update available, but repeated attempts to download and install it fail with an LU1812 error. Uninstalled and reinstalled Ghost with the same result.
Error messages in Event Viewer show:
Product: Norton Ghost -- Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product Norton Ghost. The Windows Installer cannot continue.
Product: Norton Ghost - Update '{E3440D24-FC58-428F-82BF-C517DAEC4A1A}' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages. Use the following link for instructions on turning on logging support: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23127
And an attempted backup using a Western Digital USB external drive prior to this failed at the 94% level with the following event viewer messages messages:
A file activation error occurred. The physical file name '\\?\SymantecSnapshot0\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\master.mdf' may be incorrect. Diagnose and correct additional errors, and retry the operation.

I also have multiple occurences of the following message that result in the Ghost icon disappearing from the status tray:
Faulting application VProTray.exe, version 14.0.0.24815, time stamp 0x4792b7e2, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0xad4cc000, process id 0xfb4, application start time 0x01c90615b4739eba.
I had some similar problems with Ghost 12 in handling updates, but no problems with actually performing backups.
I am reluctant to try going through the phone service because the last time I tried that, the customer service representative made some changes to my system that totally crashed it and required a total system restore to recover from.
Any assistance would be appreciated. This is starting to get annoying because I can't backup and I can't update.
Regards, Dan
Same problem.

Reinstalled Ghost 14 off download three times with same results. Uninstalled. Backup disk arrived today. Installed but afraid to run or LiveUpdate without confirmation this issue has been de-bugged. Please advise. Thank you.
I think it is correct to say that some people are having an update issue but not everybody. Today, I purchased and downloaded Ghost 14, I installed and ran liveupdate twice. It is updated to version 14.03.328361. I had no difficulty in getting the update or having it applied. Maybe thats some comfort.
The issue with LiveUpdate has been identified and development is working on it. The problem is if LiveUpdate occurs while a backup is going on Ghost gets the SymSnap driver it depends on into a bad state where it does not work. The problem can be avoided if you ensure that your LiveUpdate to 14.0.3 does not occur while a backup is going on. The easiest way to do this is to go into Ghost, make sure a backup is not running, then start LiveUpdate. When live update is done, reboot. Doing this will update you to the latest version.
Removed damaged Ghost install (for 4th time).
Rebooted computer.
Cleaned registry using CleanMyPC.
Rebooted computer.
**Ready for clean install.**
Installed Ghost v14.0.0.24815 off disk.
Ghost opened properly.
Ran LiveUpdate with Ghost open in background but not performing anything other than a LU.
LU stated 26764.4 KB update available.
Installed update.
About 75% of way through, "Windows Installer" popup stated "Fatal error during installation".
Clicked "OK".
LiveUpdate completed, but stated "LU1812: A program that was part of this update failed when it ran. The update was not applied."
LU showed that the Ghost update had failed.
Closed Ghost.
Tried to run Ghost from desktop icon.
A popup stated something similar to "The feature you are trying to run is not installed." and prompted me to insert a disk.
**Rebooted computer.**
Tried to run Ghost from Start>All Programs>Norton Ghost>Norton Ghost.
Popup stated "The item 'VProConsole_.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will not longer work properly" and prompted me to remove the shortcut.
Tried to run Recovery Point Browser from Start>All Programs>Norton Ghost>Recovery Point Browser.
Popup stated "The item 'V2iBrowser.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will not longer work properly" and prompted me to remove the shortcut.
Tried to run Security Configuration Tool from Start>All Programs>Norton Ghost>Security Configuration Tool.
Popup stated "The item 'SecurityConfig.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will not longer work properly" and prompted me to remove the shortcut.
Please advise.
Macinfla, you are running into something way different than the LiveUpdate problem mentioned above. Let me have someone contact you directly.
Macinfla,
Although what I originally posted at the start of this thread was from Windows Event Logs, the LU.Ghost messages that you posted are exactly the same that I am seeing. And the LU session is not occuring while a backup operation is taking place.
I have done a repair install of Ghost after the update failures and this seems to take care of the "missing shortcut" notices so that Ghost will operate again. At least the problem only occurs when doing a manually initiated LU. The automatic LU sessions just note that the update for Ghost did not work.
Hopefully, they will figure out what is causing this and get it fixed. When I had the same problem with Ghost 12, it took over a month before LU would successfully process the update(s) for Ghost.
Regards, Dan
DLS - Thank you for your comment. I will try the repair.
Johan - What should I watch for, an email?
I believe that I have found the problem and a solution. After digging around in the Event Viewer a bit more, it seems that when LU tried to install the update it was having a problem in that it could not find the file V2iMount.sys in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\win32\win32 folder even though the file showed up in Windows Explorer. I renamed the file in the win32 folder to V2iMount.sys.old and then copied the file by the same name from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Ghost\Shared\Drivers\win64\win64-x64 folder to the win32 folder. I ran LU and the outstanding update(s) successfully installed.
I now have 14.0.3.28361 installed.
Regards, Dan
Dan - Made changes exactly per your instructions.
Started Ghost.
Ran LU.
LU failed at last minute - same "a program failed to run..." failure notice.
LU finished and indicated that the Ghost update had failed (red indicators).
Closed LU and Ghost.
Tried to reopen Ghost using dsktop icon - it wouldn't open (same as past failures).
A popup said something like "the function you are accessing is on a disk. Please insert disk" (same as past failures).
For the heck of it this time I inserted the Norton Ghost 14.0 disk which recently arrived by mail.
Clicked OK.
After some disk hitting and configuring, Ghost opened.
I left the disk in the drive and tried LU.
LU worked.
I now have the update.
Go figure. Bizarre little bug.
Thank you for your help with this. I am not sure what occurred here to get me past the issue, but I have the latest version now - same version you reference. Good stuff.
Ran Ghost backup last night, apparently succesfully. Hopefully next LU of Ghost will run without a hitch.
Macinfla,
Yes, I forgot to mention that I had also placed the Ghost CD in the drive when I ran LU. So I can't be sure that copying the other file into the directory was the solution. It might have been that when it couldn't find the file that was there that it looked for the installation disk and found it there. A bit of a pain, but at least we are current once again.
Regards, Dan
I too am getting the LU1812 error and I tried everything to solve this problem but to no avial. This product has now become as useless as Norton Save and Restore, which byt the way, I couldn't update to the latest version either because of that error. And to add insult to injury, I just recently got Norton Ghost.
Can anyone please help me as I've been online and on the phone with this problem and it still is not corrected.
Try running the whole works with the disk in the disk drive. Run the program and the LU with Ghost disk IN DRIVE. That seemed to work for a couple of us. We don’t know why, and we don’t know if LU will work properly the next time an update is available. But it got us the first update, and I have done a couple backups since. It seems to be working fine. That’s all I can tell you - the entire extent of what I know. Good luck.
