Ghost 15 - Error E7B70001 - Win32/Win 64 API true failed

Running Win 7 Home Premium.  My backups suddenly started failing with this error, which then apparently spawns Error EBAB03F1.

There is plenty of room on the destination drive, which is a 600 gig Winchester USB external.  I've rebooted, I've cleaned old backups off the drive and I'm now desperate enough to reformat it and try again.  Any suggestions?

also, full text from log file:

I would run CHKDSK /R on both the source and destination drives. If that doesn't uncover the problem, it would re-install Ghost.

Done both.  Complete reformat of the target drive, complete uninstall and reinstall of Ghost.  No joy.  :smileysad:

Start  > Run > Type SERVICES.msc [enter].

Are the following services running?...

Norton Ghost

SymSnapService

There will also be an entry for Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider. It will not be running unless you are running a backup.

Open a command prompt. Type VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS [enter].

 Do you see these entries?...

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

Provider name: ‘Symantec Software VSS Provider’
Provider type: Software
Provider Id: {262b716e-bb23-41b5-aaef-e2c15e767167}
Version: 1.0

Provider name: ‘Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0’
Provider type: System
Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}

Symsnap was not running.   I set it to auto and rebooted.   Backup failed with the same error.

The VSS Admin command does show the two entries you described.

I'm not trying to muscle in on Red's help but if you are that desperate and you can't fix it why not restore an image when Ghost was working properly. That's what I do if I can't fix something in 5 minutes.

I agree with Brian. Either that, or try to run the Norton Removal Tool then reinstall Ghost.

It cratered weeks ago and I didn't notice it.  Too much water under the bridge.     :smileysad:

How many partitions do you have on HD0? What sizes and how much free space? Can you image Win7 to one of these partitions to see if it works?

I used the removal tool to remove Ghost, then reinstalled it from scratch.  Same error.

My drive C is an 80g drive, one partition.  I'll try going to another drive in the morning.

I think I would try a different USB drive if possible.

Reran with a different USB drive, same error.

Does anyone have any idea what these error messages mean?  I can't find anything about them.

-Error E7B70001: Win32/Win64 API true failed

--Error EBAB03F1: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

FOUND IT!!!

The Virtual Disk service somehow got set to disabled.  I re-enabled it, started it and now the backup is working.

Ah, the wierdness of Windows.   Gotta love it.

Are there any USB hubs involved? Can you try running a Cold Backup? Is there any way you could try an internal drive and eliminate USB altogether?

I'm glad you found the problem. I'm surprised when you reinstalled Ghost, it did not check and / or fix this setting.

I just checked on my PC and the Virtual Disk service is stopped and set to manual. I hope you truly did find your problem!

I think it was the fact that it was disabled.  Being set to manual means that it is enabled and can be started from within a process.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.   I just finished backing up all three hard drives.

Clothahump,

Thanks for letting us know. Great news.
