Ghost 15 error

Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: My Computer Backup.
Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file.
Error EBAB03F1: The requested operation could not be completed due to a file system limitation.
Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file.
Details:
Source: Norton Ghost

What are the possible cause of the error?  I was finnally able to get a completed backup when I select to ignore bad blocks and defragged both source and destination drives.

Both source and destination drives are NTFS.  Source is the system drive and destination USB external drive.   I am running Win7 Pro 64/

It must be file system errors which was causing this issue. Running checkdisk usually fix these types of issues. Your diagnostic of the issue was right. :smileyvery-happy:

I purcashed and installed Ghost 15 yesterday. Today I installed it and tried to run it. The disk backup worked fine. The file backup produces a error that reads "Snapshot error %1". What do I do?

Welcome,

The first thing will be to remain calm and tell us about your configuration. Operating system, source drive, destination drive, what was happening while you were starting Ghost? Just the basics but, enough for us to get a clearer picture of your situation and better feel for the possible problem.

Thanks

Dell XPS 410 with Windows XP Professional SP3

Norton Ghost is on Drive C under \programs. The file that are to be backed up are on Drives C: and D:. The destination drive is Drive G:

Nothing else was running except Ghost. It started and then the progress screen stopped, a pop-up appeared in the lower right that was shaded in pink and the error message popped up.

I can send screen shots as JPG if you like.

Can you check the following services...

Start > Run type "services.msc" [enter]. When the services window opens look for the following...

Norton Ghost - should be started and set to automatic.

Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider - Shoud be set to manual and will start when Ghost needs it.

SymSnapService - Mine is set to manual, but is started. I assume by Ghost.

While you are trobleshooting, open a command prompt (Run > cmd [enter]), and type "vssadmin list providers" [enter].

There should be two listings. Something like this..

Provider name: 'Symantec Software VSS Provider'
   Provider type: Software
   Provider Id: {262b716e-bb23-41b5-aaef-e2c15e767167}
   Version: 1.0

Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
   Provider type: System
   Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
   Version: 1.0.0.7

The error and possible solutions are described here:

Everything was as you described.

Grump-

I tried as you suggested. No joy. It produced an error. I've included a screenshot.

Please use the imageuploader.gif icon to insert an image. The one you attached as a text file is corrupted.

Well...it really isn't corrupt. It is a text file. Here it is....

Try skipping down to section 5 and see if you can click the COM+ objects without getting errors.

You should have Microsoft SOftware Shadow Copy Provider and Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider listed.

Using XP it's easy to tell if Volume Shadow copy is working.

Make a temp folder somewhere and then run the build-in Backup tool under:

Start > Programs > Accesorries > System Tools

Manually select a few folders to backup and choose the temp folder you created as the destination.

After it finishes, click the "Report" button.

If shadow copy is correctly working you get a line that says "Backup (via shadow copy)"

If it's not working you get an error and then it will say something about continuing without shadow copy.

If the MS volume shadow copy is not working, then the Symantec shadow copy will not be able to work either.
