Ghost 15 - How best to set threshhold disk space for backup storage?

What is the rule of thumb for setting the slider named "Threshhold amount of disk space to be used for backup storage"? The docs only say that the default threshold is 90 percent. I'ld like a good way to calculate the best setting.

I never use that function, I always like to delete the backups/recovery points manually. The reason for that is I only run a full backup on a monthly basis or if there is a major change and that recovery goes directly into a folder eg. backup 1 etc.

In addition to that I have a folder called (Platform1) which is used for testing and I don't want to loose that.

In your case I would say change the threshold on a trial and error basis if you insist on auto backups, perhaps other forum members might want to give advise on this matter.

I would actually prefer to only backup monthly like you do, but I prefer the automatic backup option, and the longest interval offered there is weekly.

Regarding your comment about deleting backups manually ... Ghost is creating a series of numbered files for my C drive backup. I'd like to manually delete older versions but I'm holding back for two reasons. One is that there's a huge difference in the files sizes for which I which I would like to find an explanation (from 19GB at the first backup to about 3GB at the most recent). Second, I don't know if deletion can be done simply via Windows Explorer, or should it be done somewhere in Ghost?

Just to elaborate a little bit further on what I do as far as backups are concerned, it may be of help to you in deciding what you should do.

(1),  I only install O/S and necessary software on my pc.

(2), I use a separate drive for my data and that is backed up by a third party software automatically on a daily basis on incremental settings.

(3), I don't use Ghost to delete anything, I do that via Windows Explorer.

(4), For each backup that I do manually I create a folder on the external drive, that way when you delete you delete the folder and do not interfere in other vital backup files.

Now as far as the difference in file size is concerned I think it is because Ghost is running an incremental backup hence the difference, the experts on this forum will be able to confirm that.

You will find that on your external drive there will be quite a lot of files listed in one mass the one at the top of the list will be the most vital and the others being a mixture of "full" and "incremental".

That is another reason I stick to the manual system (each individual full backup contained in one folder) in numerical order.

As I have said there are expert members on this forum that will explain better than I can regarding the file types.

Bear in mind also that I only select "Backup My Computer" and Not "Files and Folders"

The system that I use has been in place for a number of years using various versions of Ghost and it has never let me down, my final advice is to try and keep things as simple as possible to avoid problems. Hope that helps.
