Ghost 15 installation error

I botched the installation of Ghost 15 on my Windows 7/64-bit computer and would like to remove it.  I didn’t think my first click on the Installation button registered, so I clicked again, inadvertently starting a second install.  I cancelled both when I realized what was happening, and now I have an incomplete installation.

I tried to repair and remove/uninstall it using the installation CD, but I get an Error 1720.  I tried the Norton Removal Tool but get stuck when it says I need to uninstall Utilities 14 using Add/Remove Programs.  Utilities 14 is not listed there because I installed Utilities 15.

Hi Marilyn,

Welcome to Norton Community!

It's associated with Group Policies and File Sharing. Refer to the following Microsoft article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324383

The solution is to start installation using Run as Administrator option. There won't be any problem afterwards. Adding link to similar thread:

As I mentioned in my post, I DID install the program using the RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option. still got the error!
It did NOT solve the problem!

Hi Marilyn,

On the one hand I'm inclined to say you are OK since things are working properly with Ghost but on the other hand we should figure this out if possible.

Does your normal day to day user account have Administrator rights? Have you made any recent changes to any user accounts? This could be things like renaming a user account, deleting of any user accounts, etc.

If you are willing to try this I would recommend uninstalling Ghost and the log off of Windows. Then log back on using the default Administrator account, or if you like create another user account with Admin rights.

Once on this different account, please reinstall Ghost and see if you get the same message.

Doing this test would give an indication if there is something specifically tied to this one particular account.

Thanks

Allen

Thank you for your reply, I did try the installation 3 separate times, each time totally uninstalling, rebooting, & using the Run As Admin command, etc. I also followed the instructions in the MS article, creating a security log file to show any problems with user accounts, and it did not come up with any problem accounts. I have not renamed or made any changes in user accts. I am the only user of my computer, so I am the administrator & sole user account. I previously had Ghost 14 installed, and had no problems with its installation on Vista.
The backup I did was using the recovery disk, not in a Windows environment, and it worked flawlessly. However, like you say, I don’t like the idea of getting security errors, it always makes me nervous that something will fall apart down the road.

Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for the update. I would still recommend creating a new user account with Admin rights because we should make sure if this is tied to a specific account or something more generic.

Just wanted to confirm, are you using the default admin account or a different account with admin rights?

There are two things to try:

1) Using your normal user account, which from what you say has Admin rights. Please uninstall Ghost and reboot. When you install it again, you should not select to run as Administrator. This should only be necessary if your normal user account does not have Admin rights and you need to be elevated in order to install.

2) If #1 does not work, create a test user account with Admin rights. After uninstalling Ghost with your regular account, please log into this test account. As in #1, please just run the Ghost installer and do not select run as Administrator.

By the way, what other Norton or Symantec products do you have? Did you disable AV when you installed Ghost? If not, you should do this. It is also recommended for your own protection, that you disconnect yourself from the Internet while AV is disabled.

I'll look forward to an update.

Thanks

Allen

I will try your suggestions this evening and let you know if I have success! Yes, I am running NIS9, but I did disable it when installing. And I have been using the default administrator account. I’m not really that saavy about user accounts, so I wouldn’t have ever changed anything from the default settings.
I appreciate your help!
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Thanks for the update. I will be here when you have results for me.

Edit: I just noticed you have NIS 2009. If you have a current subscription you are entitled to a free upgrade to NIS 2010. You can access your free upgrade from the Norton Upgrade Site.

Thanks

Allen

SUCCESS! Option #2 worked for me!
I had no idea I could upgrade to NIS 10 for free, so I will do that now!
Thanks so much for your help!
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Thanks for the update. That is great news! :smileyhappy:

Given that option # 2 resolved this it might be a good idea to use that account going forward or at least use it to install programs in the future if you encounter similar problems. It would seem to indicate some subtle issue with the default Admin account but probably nothing significant.

If you choose at some point I can look up a procedure for you to where you can copy all the relevant user profile data from the Admin account to this new account so that you don't lose any user preferences. If you would like to do this at some point you can send me a PM (private message) and let me know.

Please mark the relevant post which you believe contained the solution by clicking on the green Solution button that only you can see. This will allow others to know the problem is solved and quickly get to the solution when they search the forums.

Thanks again for the update.

Allen

Hi,

unfortunately you have to remove all Norton products from your machine. Then will be the Norton Removal Tool able to clean the left overs.

Let us know the results.
