Can you try a "Cold" backup by booting up with the SRD or installation disk and at the recovery screen click on "Backup My Computer", I can't comment on the error because I haven't a clue but if you perform a backup as explained you will safeguard your pc.
Hi Guys, thanks for the replies, I didn't subscribe so I missed your replies. I initially had the vss install issue but managed to remedy that only to be greeted with this error message. I agree with your assessment on the partition. I bought this laptop from dell so I'm not sure exactly what they were thinking when they paritioned it. There seems to be a recovery partition of about 14gb, then something called OEM partition (100mb) and then finally my main partition. I'm guessing this is the issue but there's very little I can do with reformatting and reinstalling (never buying dell again would be a start as well I suppose :)).

Hi,
Is this computer still under warranty? If it is I'd be on the phone to Dell 'requesting' a new hard drive that is correctly formatted.
My past dealings with them have been good enough to expect that they would honor the request when they understand the problem. If there's nothing wrong with the drive other than the partitions they can reformat and repartitioin it in time to make the next system to come off the line.
Use the private message feature if I need to call them on your behalf
Yep, backing up c: to external Iomega ego 500gb hdd listed as f:
HBarca,
You are on the wrong track. Your Dell HD is perfect. It is the external HD that is the disaster but it can be fixed. Could you answer Dave's questions regarding the external HD.
Basically it is an Iomega eGO 500GB USB3.0 (4096 bytes per sector), just have it a few days bought with the express intention of backing up my dell inspiron 15r, to date an unsuccessful venture I must say. I initially tried windows backup but it consistently failed with an I/O error, I scoured the web and this seems to be a recurrent problem with Win 7 backup and these drives. So I took the plunge and bought Norton Ghost, encountering the VSS install error message and troubleshooting that so the install was successful but still no joy on the backup. It's registered as drive F: in windows with one partition encompassing it's total capacity. Upon close inspection of partinfo I do see that the errors are actually referencing the external Iomega drive, I still don't like the way Dell formatted though, separate issue I suppose though.
We can improve the Dell partitioning later but it is standard and is not an issue at present.
With your external HD, I'd copy all the data to another HD and then Wipe the HD. I use CopyWipe for Windows but use your favourite wiping app. Then using Win7 Disk Management, create a single NTFS primary partition.
That did it Brian, cheers, I was heading in that direction but am a bit out of practice on the finer details, all problems finally tackled. The drive was used when I bought it so I can only presume the previous owner did the creative partitioning.
