After $70 and 2 hours of frustration, I give up. What does it take to get a disk image on media with this software?
I was forced to upgrade from Ghost 2003 because it can't read NTFS.
Under the older version, we boot from media ( custom created by the software ), which allows us to do a complete image of the hard drive to external media ( USB ). I get my image and use it later when the hard drive fails. No issues, simple and straightforward.
Now in comes version 15, with all the shiny new stuff. Great, but it doesn't work.
I created a backup of all "drives" on my disk drive ( Can't Norton/Symantec figure out those are partitions ), watched as it created the "recover points" and wrote huge files to my USB media. The process ended after 1 hour+ and I proceeded to try and create a boot DVD.
I finally managed to create a friggin boot disk ( Custom Recovery CD ). How hard would it be for the Wizard to tell me to insert the Ghost Install Disk ( the media I purchased Ghost on ) rather than telling me to insert the Norton Recovery CD. Nothing with that name exists in the package. Nowhere! Thanks to the help screens and a lot of reading on WWW, I did finally figure this out.
So I go and get booted off this ( after an extremely long wait for the network timeout!!! ), and what do you know, the tool that runs from there tells me, sorry, no recovery points found. It can't "see" my USB media. It can't get on the network. It can't do anything. Time to start over...
I reboot and launch the stupid "recovery point browser" or whatever it is and it can't find anything. I go look on the USB media and sure enough, those huge files aren't there any longer. Digging around in the Even Log area of the application I find an error stating that some "file could not be found" and that the Recovery Point could not be created. Again, can't I get an error message DURING RUNTIME rather than find out later that my backup doesn't exist.
Here's the event in the log:
Error EC8F17B7: Cannot create recovery points for job: Drive Backup of SYSTEM (*:\), (*:\), (*:\), (*:\), (C:\), RECOVERY (D:\). Error E7D1001F: Unable to write to file. Error EBAB03F1: The system cannot find the file specified. (UMI:V-281-3215-6071)
Details: Source: Norton Ghost
So, again I ask, what does it take to get this software to make a system image?
