To save an image file directly to a CD/DVD R/RW drive, Ghost requires one or two floppy disks, depending on the Ghost version and on whether you want to make the CD/DVD R/RW disk bootable.
Creating the image file
The first floppy disk is a bootable floppy that has the system files on it. Use this disk to start the computer when you want to save an image file directly to a CD/DVD R/RW drive. Here are some ways to create the disk: (Note that in each case, the floppy disk does not load CD/DVD R/RW driver files.)
Create a system disk, and then copy the Ghost files to it. See the document How to create a DOS system disk for Ghost.
In Symantec Ghost 8.x and Norton Ghost 2003, open Ghost Boot Wizard and choose the option Standard Ghost Boot Disk. At the window Norton Ghost Boot Wizard - Additional services, do not check the option USB support or LPT support. Instead, click Next, and then continue with the prompts.
In Symantec Ghost 7.0 and 7.5, open Ghost Boot Wizard and choose the option "Boot Disk with CD-R / RW, LPT and USB Support." At the window Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard - Peer-to-peer services, do not check USB support and LPT support. Do check the option Include Adaptec SCSI drivers. Click Next, and then continue with the prompts.
Note that most SCSI devices require an ASPI driver that is specific to that device or brand of device. If using a SCSI CD-R/RW device, check the CD-R/RW drive's documentation and make sure that the file Config.sys loads the driver from the floppy disk. For more information on accessing SCSI CD-R/RW devices, see the document How to determine whether Ghost can access the CD-R/RW drive.
Making the CD disc bootable
When you use Symantec Ghost 8.x or Norton Ghost 2003 to save an image file directly to a CD/DVD R/RW disc, Ghost provides an option to make the disk bootable. If you check the option, Ghost automatically adds the necessary files to the CD/DVD disc.
In Symantec Ghost 7.5 and earlier, use the CD-ROM Boot Disk to provide CD drivers for making the CD disc bootable. When you use Ghost to save an image file directly to a CD-R/RW disk, Ghost asks whether you want to make the disk bootable. If you answer Yes, Ghost prompts for the location of the CD-R/RW driver files, because these files are not included by default on the bootable floppy disk that you started the computer with. To provide Ghost with the appropriate CD-R/RW driver files, insert a CD-ROM Boot Disk that you created in Ghost Boot Wizard.
Restoring the image file
In Norton Ghost 2003, use the Standard Ghost Boot Disk to restore the image file from a CD/DVD R/RW drive that is on the list of tested drives. To see the list of tested drives, see the document Norton Ghost 2003 compatibility with CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD drives.
In Symantec Ghost 7.5 and earlier, use the CD-ROM Boot Disk to restore the image file.
More information
See the document How to save an image directly to a CD/DVD R/RW disc.
CD-ROM Boot Disk
The Ghost Boot Wizard in Symantec Ghost 7.5 and earlier, has as option to create a CD-ROM Boot Disk. This boot disk is used in just two situations:
To start the computer when you intend to restore images from a CD-ROM.
To provide driver files to Ghost on demand. When saving an image file directly to a CD-R/RW disk, Ghost asks whether you want to make the disk bootable. If you say Yes, Ghost needs to save driver files to the CD-R/RW disk. Because Ghost does not load CD-R/RW drivers during startup, it does not have such drivers available. You supply the drivers by telling Ghost where to find the files. Usually, you supply the files by inserting a CD-ROM Boot Disk that you created for this computer.
CD/DVD Startup Disk with Ghost
The Ghost Boot Wizard in Symantec Ghost 8.x and Norton Ghost 2003 has as option to create a CD/DVD Startup Disk with Ghost. This bootable floppy disk includes generic CD/DVD ROM drivers. The disk is used in just two situations:
When you saved an image file to a CD/DVD R/RW drive that is not on Symantec's list of tested drives and you want to restore the image. Use this disk to start the computer. To see the list of tested drives, see the document Norton Ghost 2003 compatibility with CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD drives.
When you want to access files on a CD/DVD R/RW drive that are not image files. Use this disk to start the computer.
