OK, using info from a post on here I've cured my first problem with the cloned drive.  Now when I put the new drive in my Toughbook laptop, it starts the boot process and goes to the second XP screen (with the dark bars at the top and bottom) and just hangs there.  The cursor will move around the screen and I can see intermittant disk activity still occurring but it just stays on that screen.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a bit confused about the steps you took in creating this image:

Took my 30gb XP drive out of my Panasonic Toughbook CF-28, put it in my desktop XP system and cloned it using Ghost 9 to a Samsung 160gb drive. XP says the drive is "healthy" and active. Put the 160gb in my toughbook and it says "no operating system".

1) So the 30 GB disk had XP installed, as well as Ghost 9? Or was Ghost 9 installed somewhere else? Was 30 GB disk a slave drive for another?

2) I'm guessing that the 160 GB disk was attached to the desktop, and was somehow connected with the 30 GB disk. What was the setup?

3) What were the settings you used when you "cloned it"?

Any additional information you can provide about this setup is appreciated. We want to get a complete picture of which steps you took in this process. Thanks!

Thanks for the response Tony,

Here is the sequence of events.

My Toughbook is running XP with a 30gb hard drive. I wanted to upgrade to a larger hard drive but don't have a cd/dvd on the Toughbook. So, I removed the 30gb drive from the Toughbook and installed it as drive #2 on my desktop system also

running XP. I cloned the drive on that desktop using Ghost 9.

Originally, I first formatted the 160bg drive I was going to put in my Toughbook on my desktop and it showed up in XP as drive F: and "Healthy" which was the problem with

the original message you're quoting. When you format it first and then try to clone to it, the process doesn't work at all for some reason. When I installed that cloned 160gb drive in the Toughbook, it wouldn't even start to boot. BIOS said there was no OS on the drive. I discovered the solution to

this problem by reading this forum and someone else had the same problem and found out the drive you're cloning to must NOT be

formatted and recognized by the system you're running Ghost on.

I then took the 160gb drive out of the Toughbook and re-installed it in my desktop as drive #2, deleted the partition on the 160gb and then restored the Ghost file to the unformatted 160gb drive. t. The cloning process went through normally and I then removed the 160gb drive from my desktop and installed it in my Toughbook.

And I now have the problem I'm describing in this message that the Toughbook starts to boot and goes to the second XP screen (the

one with the dark bars at the top and bottom of the screen and hangs there. I see some disk activity going on but it is minimal, just like

a probe of the disk every few seconds or so but nothing else.

I do see one burst of activity early on after it gets to the second XP screen which looks like XP is trying to go to a CD or diskette (I see it probe the media slot on the

Toughbook like it's looking for a CD or something). But that's as far as the boot process gets.

I've tried this several times now, telling Ghost to fill the rest of the 160gb, etc., just to see if it makes a difference or not but it still hangs

exactly the same.

If you have any suggestions, I'm willing to give them a try. Or if you know of a way to troubleshoot this problem, I would appreciate any input.

I've put the 30gb back in to see if it still works and everything is fine with it in there.

Sorry for the long story but I wanted to make sure you had all the details.

Thanks,

Harry

OK, I finally got it to work.

I put the 30gb drive back in my Toughbook and installed Ghost 9 on the TB. Then, using Ghost 9, I copied the drive to a file on the

TB. At first I could not verify the image. I kept getting errors in the verify. I then shut down all running processes in XP that weren’t

needed and copied the drive again. After that the verification ran without errors.

Then I took the 30gb out of the TB and installed it as drive #2 in my desktop running XP and I copied the image

over to my desktop.

Then I took the 30gb out and installed the 160gb as drive #2 in my desktop and restored the image to the 160gb using Ghost 9.

Then I took the 160gb out of the desktop, put it in the ToughBook and it booted correctly.

This troubleshooting and resolution process took a LLLOOOOONNNNGGG time but it’s finally working.

Thanks for the moral support guys.

Harry
